– 2003 Triumph Bonneville America

Bonneville America

A true original that has taken the cruiser class by storm, the America has been one of Triumph’s most successful models launched so far. Sales have far outstripped expectations and demand for this evocative machine shows no sign of slowing down.

The enduring appeal of the America lies in a European heritage married to stateside styling elements to create a modern, yet resonantly classic alternative to American or Japanese machinery. The fact that the America is in such demand in the cruiser heartland of the USA speaks volumes for its integrity as a design and the enduring appeal of the Triumph name.
Built to turn heads in city streets and cope with the demands of long distance open road cruising, this low-slung masterpiece of styling is engineered to perform. Built around the 790cc DOHC eight-valve Bonneville engine, the America’s seductive off-beat exhaust note comes from the 270 degree firing angle of the twin cylinder unit, instead of the more usual 360 degree set-up. The America is big on character and easy to live with.

Driving through a five-speed gearbox the relaxed engine beat from the chromed slash-cut mufflers provides a potent soundtrack for the longest trip. And the America does distance to perfection. With forward-mounted chromed footpegs matched to a low 28inch seat height and raked back handlebars on a slab-style top yoke, the laid-back riding position offers day-long comfort and control in a finely developed ergonomic package.

There’s no shortage of shine to set-off the traditional cruiser-style lighting and instrumentation. Centrally-mounted above the long-distance 16.6 litre fuel tank is a deep-chromed instrument console matching the old-style chromed Triumph tank badges. Raked back from the top slab-yoke is a chrome-bezelled, white-faced speedo above the chromed shell of the single headlight. Even the pillion footrest hangers are styled to resemble the trademark toolbox from pre-war Triumphs. Two-tone, hand-coachlined paint schemes complete the picture with a third option – vivid Caspian Blue with Silver infill – added for 2003.

Running on an 18-inch front wheel, mounted in brushed-finish heavy-duty wide-style forks and a 15-inch rear wheel wearing a fat 170 section rear tyre, the America is built to take on whatever the open road can throw at it. With disc brakes and two-piston calipers front and rear stopping is more than taken care of.

And with an ever-growing range of dedicated Triumph accessories ready to custom fit, the America can be as personal a statement as anyone chooses to make about their style of motorcycling. From luggage to extra chrome embellishments, from brake upgrades to clutch covers, there are even entire custom-painted bodywork kits to bring out the individual in each and every owner.
