2014 Harley-Davidson FLHR Road King Review

2014 Harley-Davidson FLHR Road King

If you’re wondering what the future of timeless boulevard cruiser style meets long riding looks like, you can stop—because it’s here.

Enhanced by Project RUSHMORE, the 2014 Harley-Davidson Road King® is a touring motorcycle for the rider who prefers the look of a classic windshield to that of a fairing. New features include the more-powerful High Output Twin Cam 103™, brighter Dual Halogen headlamp and halogen fog lamps, new Impeller wheels, restyled hard saddlebags and a new easier-to-read speedometer. Reflex™ Linked Brakes with ABS are a new option for the Road King. Its air-adjustable touring rear suspension and a comfortable seating position are just what rider and passenger demand for long-distance comfort.

The innovative Harley-Davidson® Touring chassis, based on a single-spar, rigid backbone frame and a stout swingarm developed to withstand the demands of long-haul touring riders and today’s more-powerful engines.

Harley-Davidson has created a new generation of American freedom machines. In the largest scale new model launch in the company’s 110-year history, Project RUSHMORE encompasses eight new motorcycles that feature improved power and braking performance, enhanced rider ergonomics, and dramatic styling updates that completely redefine and fundamentally transform the touring motorcyclist’s experience.

Countless ideas. Thousands of hours of research and testing. Eight extraordinary motorcycles. Project RUSHMORE introduces technology and design enhancements that will recalibrate the expectations of the touring motorcyclist: Savvy electronic controls and infotainment. Aerodynamics born in the wind tunnel. Bodywork shaped by the most-respected styling team in the industry. Comfort good for endless miles and, of course, more American V-Twin power. The road trip will never be the same.

Project RUSHMORE is the result of an entirely new way to produce motorcycles. In a process that invokes the voice of the customer throughout an accelerated development program, the ideas and dreams of thousands of motorcyclists are allowed to percolate with those of Harley-Davidson employees.

“Project RUSHMORE is a pure expression of our relationship with our customers and a shared passion for riding motorcycles,” said Mark-Hans Richer, Harley-Davidson Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “It’s resulted in some outstanding innovations, but from day one we’ve been focused on taking the total rider and passenger experience to the next level. We get there together, we come together – to quote the Beatles – through a process that uses not just formal feedback, but the kind of input we get from listening to customers out on the road, in the real world, and then blends that with our engineering and styling expertise. For years at Harley-Davidson we’ve been saying that we ride with you. Project RUSHMORE elevates that devotion to a higher level.”

Respect the heritage, but move it forward. That was the mission of the Project RUSHMORE team tasked with restyling the 2014 Harley-Davidson Touring and Trike models. Form and function progressed together as stylists working alongside engineers devised new shapes that are crisp and modern, aerodynamic, lighter in weight, and pleasing to touch. The styling team influenced every aspect of the new motorcycles, from the contours of the iconic Batwing fairing to the tactile feel of new hand control switches, and bring complete continuity to the design aesthetic. The motorcycles are undoubtedly new, yet undeniably Harley-Davison.

“When we got this assignment, we knew that we were messing with the Holy Grail of motorcycles,” said Brian Nelson, lead stylist on Project Rushmore. “We don’t do trend bikes, or fashion-statement motorcycles. We try to make something that will last forever. But we also have an obligation to move the brand forward, to make it look and function better. Project RUSHMORE was a tremendous opportunity to enhance many facets of these Harley-Davidson models.”

2014 Harley-Davidson FLHR Road King Total Motorcycle Features and Benefits

Project RUSHMORE – Engine

As every rider knows, the engine is at the heart of the experience of riding a motorcycle. The amount of torque and horsepower it delivers over the RPM range is in direct proportion to the feeling it gives you when you roll on the throttle. We know what riders want from a motorcycle engine because we’ve been building them for 110 years. Project RUSHMORE gave us the opportunity to dial it in just right. We conducted thousands of road tests with real riders giving us feedback to build the next iteration of the legendary Harley-Davidson® engine. The consensus was: We want more. More low-end torque, more passing power, more perfection in the tone of the exhaust note, more of the feeling we ride a motorcycle for. So we built the engines that deliver it. We’re proud to unveil the next level of Harley-Davidson® V-Twin engine. And prove once and for all, the customer is always right.

Pure Harley-Davidson® Styling

Feast your eyes on the Twin Cam 103™ engine and there’s no mistaking its roots. This is authentic Harley-Davidson style through and through with an attention to detail you won’t find from any other motorcycle company. Black powder-coated heads and cylinders are highlighted by machined cooling fin tips and chrome rocker covers. It’s a jewel machined out of metal. Pure. Dripping with power. From the classic edge of the cooling fins to the clean lines of cases and covers—the Twin Cam 103™ engine makes an ironclad statement about holding on to what’s right and staying true to what satisfies.

Six-Speed Cruise Drive® Transmission

You want a ride that rumbles—not begs for mercy—when you lean on it a little. The Six-Speed Cruise Drive® transmission provides smooth, quiet shifting and reduces engine speed on the highway, so you get a better match between engine turnover and road speed. And the Isolated Drive System makes acceleration flow in a smooth, steady stream from your wrist right down to the pavement. It’s a rare ride when a bike responds like this, and a low growl goes a long way when you’re opening up the road ahead.

Twin Cam 103™ Engine Heritage

The knowledge of what makes an engine truly move a rider runs deep at The Motor Company, and it was put to good use when we created the Twin Cam 103™; engine. We sweated bullets perfecting every cubic inch, pushing design and technology forward. And we did it all without compromising one bit of Harley-Davidson’s unique styling. Evolved, yet carrying on the legacy of the Flathead, Knucklehead, Panhead, Shovelhead, Evolution®, Twin Cam 88®; and Twin Cam 96™ engines that came before. The performance and durability are a direct result of the untold miles logged on the V-Twin since 1909, and the proud heritage that comes from a century’s worth of commitment to life on two wheels.

Twin Cam 103™ Engine Innovation

Fire up the Twin Cam 103™ engine and feel the low-end torque unleashed. Thanks to the lightweight piston design, delivery of the added power is more refined than ever. Then put your foot on the shifter and feel how the engine and Six-Speed Cruise Drive® transmission were designed to work together. Six speeds. A strong driveline and strong internal parts. Low routine maintenance. And a low cruising rpm couldn’t feel better.

Twin Cam 103™ Engine Power

Live your ride to the power of Twin Cam 103™. The air cooled Twin Cam 103™ Harley Davidson® engine delivers more stump pulling torque, while its Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection jetting gives crisp, lively throttle reaction. It’s a performance punch that you’ll appreciate when passing, climbing hills, or rolling with luggage packed or a passenger in back—all under that signature Motor Company rumble. And it comes at lower cruising rpm, so you ride more smoothly, with less engine vibration and better highway fuel economy.

Project RUSHMORE – Confidence

Here are some of the innovations The Rider Project led to: the new Reflex® Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Linked Brakes, new dual halogen and LED headlamps and fog lamps, brighter Tour Pak® lighting, brighter turn signals, brighter brake lights, and a new steering head with stiffer front forks. Locked-up tires are now history even when there’s wet pavement. We’ve made it feel even better to lean your way through a turn. Now you can see better. And we’ve made you more conspicuous to the cage-driving public. Because one thing we all agree on is this: Bikes that work better make riders who ride better. Take a ride. See how good you can be

Reflex® Linked Brakes with Anti-lock Braking System

No doubt about it, there are times riding when you need to haul things down in a hurry. And you don’t get to pick those times. Or decide whether or not they occur when you’re on a flat, smooth, dry, perfect new stretch of pavement. That’s why our touring models feature the new Reflex® anti-lock braking system (ABS) with dynamically, electronically linked brakes. ABS turns a locked up front wheel or a rear wheel skid into a relic from riding’s history. And the front and rear brakes are electronically linked to provide exactly the right amount of brake to each tire no matter what the road condition is. No matter how good you are, this will make you a better rider.

New Steering Head and Front Forks

Whether it’s a big sweeping curve or a set of tight turns, getting through the corners just got better. We stiffened up the front end, increased the fork diameter to 49mm and added new steel ball bearings, with lubricant contained inside to keep contaminants out for durability. The responsiveness

Air-Adjustable Suspension

With air-adjustable suspension that comes standard, you can dial in your ride to accommodate heavier or lighter payloads, battle unexpected road conditions or simply set it to how you like to roll. The lighter the load, the softer you can go by decreasing the air pressure a bit, or increase the air pressure for a more firm ride. A convenient air valve is located between the saddlebag and rear fender for quick adjusting. It’s all about rider and passenger comfort and setting your bike to fit your taste—the easy way.

Brembo® Brakes

Confidence. Control. High-performance dual disc Brembo® brakes offer consistent stopping power at all speeds. The 4-piston front and rear caliper with dual front rotor brake system is state of the art and top of the line. It’s just another way The Motor Company puts a high level of detail into their bikes to give you peace of mind throughout your journey.

Dunlop® Multi-Tread™ Tires

The 180mm back tire is engineered to do more than fill out the rear fender and put a bigger patch of rubber on the road. Dunlop® Multi-Tread™ technology uses harder compounds at the center and softer on the sides for a tire that still knows how to knuckle-down on corners. Perfect for making this bike agile on every curvy stretch of road. And the way it feels going through an abrupt off-camber turn will put a grin on your face that’ll last to the next state line.

H-D® Smart Security System (Optional)

The factory installed next-generation security system features a hands-free fob that automatically arms and disarms the vehicle electronic security functions as you approach and walk away from the bike. Stick the fob on your ignition key ring and let it do all the work. It’s this attention to details and security that make Harley-Davidson® motorcycles unique.

New ergonomically designed hand controls

It’s hard to enjoy the ride or keep your eyes focused on what’s coming down the road when you’re fussing and bothering with the switches on your handlebar. So we’ve worked over the hand controls on our new touring bikes with as much passion as we’ve worked over our new engine. We made the shape more ergonomic and located and angled them to fall right under your thumbs. We’ve added left-hand cruise for easy activation, an easily locatable trigger switch to control and scan through functional readouts. And we’ve improved the feel to give you a confidence-inspiring click at every push of a button. And it’s all prewired for parts and accessories, which even lets you customize with less fuss and bother.

Dual Halogen Headlight and Fog Lamps

When the sun goes low, the amount of road you have your eyes trained on stays high .Sitting inside that classic Hiawatha nacelle, you got a new dual halogen headlamp and halogen fog lamps to match. Boasting a higher quality of light than previous models courtesy of a darkness-defying 986 lumens, they ensure you’ll have no trouble seeing everything out there that needs to be seen.

Project RUSHMORE – Styling

Project RUSHMORE is the journey we set out on to take our touring motorcycles to places never imagined before – to turn all the possibilities for what a motorcycle can be now into true Milwaukee steel. We did it our way, as we’ve always done. As riders. Riding with other riders. Thousand of hours, countless road tests, millions of miles. Looking for the technology and innovations that truly make the ride better. We went over the bike fender tip to fender tip. Making it work better. Making it look sleeker. Modern. Clean. Tight. Let your eye take the journey over the machine. This is classic Harley-Davidson style and an all-new look at the exact same time. At Harley-Davidson, form has always followed function. And both have always reported to emotion. Now we’re just doing it on a completely different level.

Low Mounted License Plate

We keep the back end clean and classy with a low mounted license plate that features little visible hardware. As an extra touch, we throw some LED lighting around the tag for crisp visibility and style—just enough to give your tail end a glow when you’re riding through the night. This completes the classic, uncluttered look of the Road King® model.

Classic Fuel Tank

Part of the unmistakable style of the Harley-Davidson® Road King® motorcycle is plenty of room for showing off your paint. This classically styled, bold six-gallon fuel tank doesn’t just give you a bigger canvas for premium or custom paint; it holds six gallons of go so you can eat up a lot more road between pit stops. A dual-color paint scheme and unique Harley-Davidson waterslide graphics give this bike a truly one-of-a-kind look.

Classic Hiawatha Headlamp

Big and commanding, this headlamp hearkens back to the Big Twins of the 60s. You get nothing less than the latest in materials and technology. Clear-lens reflector optics provide a longer distance high beam and wider low beam. It’s a bright, striking daytime lamp that blasts a little further into the night. There’s just no beating the classic lines of that sweeping headlight nacelle.

New Tank And Fender Badges

This isn’t just a motorcycle. It’s a work of art, born out of passion, creativity and long days, late nights and refusing to be satisfied until every detail was perfect. When we added the signature, we did it with metal. Nothing else would be right on this masterpiece.

Agitator Chrome Wheels

The Road King® motorcycle rides on custom Agitator 7-spoke, mirror-chrome wheels wrapped in classic wide white wall tires. And there’s a new brake rotor designed to show more of the wheel and a cut back front fender that uncovers more of the white wall tire. Nostalgia, meet the cutting edge of street custom.

Project RUSHMORE – Comfort

The comfort of our machines has been dialed in the hard way: Over 110 years and thousands of miles in all kinds of conditions on every kind of street, road and highway ever laid down in pavement. Long hours in the saddle are the only way there is to learn what you need to know about things like airflow, heat management, seat materials and textures and the amount of effort it takes to pull a clutch lever. We don’t stop until we build the most comfortable machines you can throw a leg over. We all want to go farther, and when you and your rider are more comfortable in the saddle, you can.

Full-Length Footboards & Toe/Heel Gear Shifts

Your boots were made for riding—any way you see fit. Our full-length footboards boast a time-tested, tried-and-true design and rubber isolation for a comfortable ride, while the height-adjustable passenger boards add another level of customizable comfort for your riding partner. And for shifting gears, you can use either the traditional toe-shift or the even easier, more convenient heel-shift. It might take a few rides, but once you’ve gotten used to the smooth shifting rhythm, you’ll never give it up.

Two-Up Road King® Seat

A classic feature revamped for contemporary looks and performance—without sacrificing an ounce of nostalgic style. Sculpted with a deep bucket and narrow neck this ultimate Touring saddle relieves pressure on your thighs, while providing more back support and comfort for a wide variety of rider sizes. And the lower seat height—26.5 inches to be exact—puts your feet closer to the road to enhance your confidence. Additionally, the leather trim and premium stitching accentuate the advanced ergonomics while giving the seat that sharp detail you only find on a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle. It’s science in service of comfort, and your way to beat fatigue over the long haul.

Wide Set Handlebar

Classic style and maximum comfort. That’s the perfect balance of the wide set handlebars that come standard on the Road King® Classic model. They’re designed to keep you comfortably propped in a commanding position while making sure your neck muscles stay calm and relaxed mile after mile, state after state. Durable stainless steel insures the structural rigidity you expect from a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle with the deep, lustrous finish you desire.

Detachable Windshield

Go from touring to cruising in a heartbeat. Detach the screen for a clean, cool cruising style, or re-attach it in seconds for a clean envelope of air over the long haul. The windshield is as tough as they come—durable, scratch resistant, low maintenance. And whether you choose to have it on off, your Road King® Classic motorcycle rules with a nostalgic style and versatility you can make your own.

Standard Cruise Control

Installing cruise control is standard operating procedure on the new touring models because riding long stretches of unbroken highway is standard operating procedure among touring riders. Electronic throttle control means no cable cluttering up your handlebar. And the switches are placed where you can easily dial in your speed with your left thumb, give the wrist a break, and keep hauling on down the road.

Project RUSHMORE – Convenience

If you want the ride to be truly epic, you have to sweat bullets to make the little things work exactly right. This is what Project RUSHMORE was all about. Now you have saddlebags that can be easily opened with one hand. Compartments that open with one touch. And we’ve increased the storage space on these new machines without ruining the sleek, road-eating look of the bike. It all adds up to hundreds of little moments where things just click conveniently into place. Because there can be no imperfections in the quest for the perfect ride.

One Touch Design Philosophy

Here’s the rule we laid down for every compartment cover and saddlebag lid on our touring line: if it doesn’t open with the single touch of a button or one hand, while wearing gloves, it doesn’t go on the motorcycle. Because in all our conversations with all the riders we talked while we were rebuilding these motorcycles from the ground up, we didn’t encounter a single individual who wanted to have to put something on the ground before he could store it in a saddlebag.

New Saddlebag Design

Don’t let the sleek new look of these saddlebags deceive you. The look is tight on the outside, but things just got a little roomier on the inside. You want stuffability and these deliver bigger than ever. The hinges are simple and clean and the lids they open with one touch of one hand. The lock is tight and integrated into the latch where you can put the key in without the danger of scratching your premium paint. Welcome to the next level of the bagger.

2014 Harley-Davidson FLHR Road King Press Release 1

PROJECT RUSHMORE REDEFINES 2014 HARLEY-DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLES
Extraordinary Customer-Led Effort Transforms World’s Most Popular Touring Motorcycles

MILWAUKEE (August 19, 2013) – Harley-Davidson has created a new generation of American freedom machines.

Building on the technological foundation that established the company’s dominant leadership in the touring motorcycle segment, eight new 2014 Harley-Davidson models, including Road King®, Street Glide®, Street Glide® Special, Electra Glide® Ultra Classic®, Ultra Limited, Tri Glide® Ultra, CVO Ultra Limited and CVO Road King® feature innovative Project RUSHMORE-inspired enhancements. They slot into four customer-defined categories:
•Control: Project RUSHMORE bikes pass faster, stop quicker and see farther at night, thus inspiring rider confidence. Each model features the new Twin-Cooled™ High Output Twin Cam 103™ or the High Output Twin Cam 103™ powertrains, Reflex™ Linked Brakes with ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System), and Daymaker™ LED and Dual Halogen lighting.

PROGRESSIVE PROJECT RUSHMORE STYLING MELDS FORM AND FUNCTION
A Comprehensive Effort Touches All Harley-Davidson Touring and Trike Models

MILWAUKEE (August 18, 2013) – Respect the heritage, but move it forward.

Almost every visible element of the six 2014 Harley-Davidson Touring and Trike models has been restyled, including the wheels, bodywork, luggage, instrument displays and hand controls, each with the goal of improving both the look and the function of each component.
•New Batwing Fairing: The new fairing is the most obvious styling change for 2014, in part because its shape is so familiar to riders and non-riders alike. The new Batwing fairing represents an intense collaboration between stylists and engineers. The two teams worked together to create a shape that is a fresh yet recognizable interpretation of an iconic design, and also provides a significant reduction in head buffeting to the rider. The centered intake port for the splitstream vent transitions smoothly to the base of the windshield. Other changes to the fairing shape are more subtle. Coverage in front of the hand controls is slightly larger, and there is more overhang of the headlamp.
•One-Touch Design: A functional element applied to the Tour-Pak®, saddlebags, Jukebox, fairing lower storage compartments, and fuel tank door permits latching and unlatching with a simple press or pull of a finger.
•New Tour-Pak: Its crisp new shape makes the new Tour-Pak appears more compact, but it actually offers 4 percent more capacity than the previous Tour-Pak design, and still holds two full-face helmets. New LED rear lighting is less intrusive within the rear corners of the Tour-Pak. The single One-Touch latch, and a new self-centering catch and retractable tether, makes it possible to open and close the Tour-Pak lid with one hand. The Tour-Pak lock is now integrated into the latch. New premium hinges eliminate exposed rivets. The interior features a new liner material and a new map and tool kit pouch. The new Tour-Pak support structure looks cleaner and allows one-inch adjustment of the Tour-Pak forward or back to reposition the passenger backrest.
•New Saddlebag Luggage: The new hard saddlebags have a sleeker shape that complements the Tour-Pak, and offer about 1 percent more capacity. New One-Touch latch handles are located between the seat and the saddlebag. A new hinge design makes it possible to open the lid with one hand. The tubular saddlebag guards have been reshaped to increase passenger leg room while still providing protection for the bags. The new saddlebag supports are made of cast aluminum and are cleaner looking, lighter in weight, comprise fewer parts, and provide better bag alignment than the steel supports they replace. The new supports also accommodate easier installation of accessory docking kits for backrests and racks.
•New Jukebox Compartment: The new Jukebox compartment on the fairing dash features a USB port for charging and connecting to mobile phones and other electronic devices. The Jukebox compartment features a cushioned bottom and water-resistant foam seal around the One-Touch door.
•New Fairing Lowers Storage: The storage compartments in the lower fairings offer 37 percent more capacity than the previous design, and feature hinged doors with One-Touch latches. A new sliding latch for the fairing vent door is easier to use.
•New Hand Controls: The shape, feel, position and function of all hand controls have been improved. Hand control buttons have a dished shape and angle that better fits the thumb or finger and provides positive engagement. Switch texture and keystroke was designed to provide better feel and feedback. The cruise control button is moved to the left hand control so the right hand no longer has to maintain the throttle and engage the control. All infotainment functions are controlled through thumb-operated five-way joysticks located on the left and right hand control areas. A new Trip switch trigger on the back of the left hand control cycles the LCD screen on the speedometer through odometer, trip, range to empty, clock and gear displays. Five open panel switches are prewired for installation of accessories.
•New Gauges: Designed to be easier to read in all conditions, the new speedometer and tachometer on all fairing-equipped models feature a 10 percent larger viewing area and 68 percent wider numbers. Warning lights and the speedometer screen are also larger and more visible. The fuel and volt gauges are 28 percent larger. The oil pressure and ambient air temperature displays have been moved to the Boom!™ Box infotainment screen. The Ultra Limited gauges have an elevated and lighted “stadium” tic band around the perimeter. A larger number font is also featured on the Road King® speedometer.
•New Fenders: All 2014 Harley-Davidson Touring models feature a more contemporary front fender design. The steel fender has a streamlined shape, and the skirt has been cut higher to expose more of the front wheel. The fender is also tilted forward slightly to level it with the ground. The rail and rubber bumper have been removed from the Electra Glide Ultra Classic and Ultra Limited models, and those models and the Road King have a sleeker tip light. At the rear, Electra Glide® Ultra Classic® and Ultra Limited models have the turn signals relocated to the Tour-Pak, and the rubber fender bumper has been eliminated. The rear fender rubber bumper and tip guard has also been removed from the Road King.
•New Wheels: All Touring models feature new Original Equipment cast aluminum wheels designed to be lighter and stiffer than previous wheel styles. The Street Glide® and Street Glide® Special models are equipped with the five-spoke Enforcer cast aluminum wheel and feature a new 19-inch diameter front wheel. Other Touring models are fitted with the new 10-spoke Impeller cast aluminum wheels, with an 18-inch diameter front wheel. All models have a 16-inch diameter rear wheel.

NEW HARLEY-DAVIDSON VENTED BATWING FAIRING BATTLES BUFFETING
Improved Passenger Comfort Is Another Key Aspect of Project RUSHMORE Effort

MILWAUKEE (August 18, 2013) – Science and experience come together in the Project RUSHMORE effort to improve rider and passenger comfort of many Harley-Davidson® Touring and Trike motorcycle models. The Project RUSHMORE team analyzed computer models, logged thousands of wind tunnel sessions and racked up countless miles of real-world road testing. More valuable feedback was gathered from thousands of experienced touring riders and passengers. The result is a reshaped Batwing fairing equipped with a splitstream vent that significantly reduces wind buffeting to the rider, and a new shotgun seating area that will have passengers measuring rides in smiles per gallon.

Project RUSHMORE Batwing Fairing
The challenge was daunting: reduce head buffeting for riders of Harley-Davidson Touring and Trike models while maintaining the iconic visage of the Batwing fairing, perhaps the most recognizable face in motorcycling. The result is brilliant. Though subtly reshaped and restyled, the new Batwing fairing maintains the look that launched a million road trips.

Development of the new Batwing fairing required the collaboration of Harley-Davidson engineers and stylists. The effort started with initial development aided by the virtual science of CFD (computational fluid dynamics). The aim was to reduce buffeting while not completely isolating the rider in a pocket of dead air, and also while maintaining the airflow necessary to cool powertrain components. Prototypes were produced, tested, refined, and sometimes discarded. Those that showed the most promise made it to the wind tunnel at Wichita State University, where the Project RUSHMORE team logged more than 3,000 test sessions, gathering both objective data and subjective input from a variety of riders who experienced the fairing designs while seated on a motorcycle in the wind tunnel. Finally, the fairing met the real-world test of the road.

The key design element of the new fairing is its splitstream vent located below the windshield which alters the air pressure behind the fairing and contributes to a significant reduction in buffeting. The vent is not adjustable and is intended to be open in almost any riding condition, but a door controlled by a One-Touch push-button will close the vent to keep rain water out. The standard windshield on Electra Glide® Ultra Classic®, Ultra Limited and Tri-Glide® Ultra models is 3.25 inches lower than that of previous models, a change that is a component of the fairing design.

Other alterations to the shape of the fairing include a new contour below the windshield, slightly more coverage in front of the hand controls, and more overhang of the headlamp. Even the shape and placement of turn signals were considered during aerodynamic testing, and all fairing-equipped 2014 Touring models are fitted with bullet-shaped front signals. The compact shape and position of the airbox for the new High Output Twin Cam 103™ and Twin-Cooled™ High Output Twin Cam 103™ engines improves airflow around the rider and creates additional leg room on the right side of the motorcycle.

Improved Fairing Lowers
The fairing lowers for the Electra Glide Ultra Classic, Ultra Limited and Tri-Glide Ultra models were reshaped as part of over-all aerodynamic testing and to accommodate the heat exchangers for models powered by the Twin-Cooled™ High Output Twin Cam 103™ engine. Airflow to the rider and passenger, and to the powertrain, is improved. The adjustable vent is more effective and has a new handle that makes it easier to open and close the vent.

Passenger Comfort
Shotgun calls the shots, so a successful tour depends on passenger comfort. Project RUSHMORE worked to address almost every aspect of the passenger seating area on models equipped with a Tour-Pak. The surface of the passenger pillion is one inch wider and one inch longer, and rear speaker pods are shifted outboard by one inch on each side. The height, width, angle and shape of the backrest are changed to provide optimal comfort and more lumbar support for a wide variety of riders. The shape and angle of the armrests is adjusted to keep passenger arms from slipping forward. The saddlebag guards are moved down and back to minimize contact with the passenger’s calves and to create more legroom (all Touring models have the new saddlebag guards). Passenger audio controls are to the right and positioned to be easy to reach, while the passenger headset connection is now located on the left speaker pod.

It all looked good on paper and in the shop, but Project RUSHMORE assembled a dedicated passenger test crew and logged multiple passenger evaluation rides on the track and on real roads; in heat, in cold, in sun, and in rain. The comfort scores exceeded Project RUSHMORE expectations.

PROJECT RUSHMORE REFINES POWER, LIGHTING AND BRAKING
Rider Control and Confidence is Enhanced in All Situations and Conditions

MILWAUKEE (August 18, 2013) – That guy who said less is more is not part of the Harley-Davidson Project RUSHMORE team – when it comes to motorcycle control, more is always more. To that end Project RUSHMORE delivers 2014 Harley-Davidson Touring and Trike models with more power, improved headlamp performance, and new Reflex™ Linked Brakes with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System).

These upgrades enhance rider control in a variety of situations. More roll-on power produces brisker passing performance. Brilliant headlamps illuminate the night and make the motorcycle conspicuous to others. Reflex™ Linked Brakes with ABS is the ultimate rider-control tool when road conditions are less than ideal. Whether the ride is a cross-country ramble or a Saturday night cruise, these elements of Project RUSHMORE inspire rider confidence.

Project RUSHMORE Control Features include:
•High Output Twin Cam 103™: Harley-Davidson powertrain engineers working with Project RUSHMORE tuned the new High Output Twin Cam 103™ engine specifically to deliver more passing power. Equipped with a new camshaft to optimize bottom-end torque and a new high-flow airbox, the HO Twin Cam 103 delivers 5 percent more torque than the standard Twin Cam 103™ powertrain in a Touring configuration. The result is a dramatic improvement in 60-to-80 mph roll-on acceleration in fifth gear, the kind of real-world power that hustles a rider back into the right-hand lane, or up the mountain briskly, even with a passenger and gear on board. The new airbox has the added comfort-enhancing benefit of improving legroom and airflow around the rider. The HO Twin Cam 103 is Original Equipment on the 2014 Harley-Davidson Road King®, Street Glide®, Street Glide® Special, and Electra Glide® Ultra Classic® motorcycle models.
•Twin-Cooled™ High Output Twin Cam 103™: Designed to maintain performance in the most-challenging situations, the new Twin-Cooled™ High Output Twin Cam 103™ powertrain is featured in the 2014 Ultra Limited and Tri Glide™ Ultra models. A combination of air-cooled and precision liquid cooling strategies allow the Twin-Cooled High Output 103 to maintain peak performance under the most demanding loads and riding conditions, and enables a higher 10.1:1 compression ratio for increased power and efficiency. The Twin-Cooled High Output 103 offers 10.7 percent more peak torque than the standard Twin Cam 103 engine. Liquid coolant is routed through the cylinder heads in the area around the exhaust valves and then to ducted heat exchangers located in the left and right fairing lowers. The precision cooling system is thermostatically controlled, and uses an electric pump to circulate coolant. The Twin-Cooled High Output 103 may also improve thermal comfort to the rider and passenger in extreme conditions, such as stop-and-go traffic in high ambient temperatures. Cylinder head temperatures are lower, the airbox shape improves airflow, and reshaped fairing lowers improve venting of air to the rider and passenger.
•New Hydraulic Clutch Control: All 2014 Touring and Trike models except the Road King are equipped with a new hydraulic clutch control that maintains the previous cable clutch-lever effort despite stronger clutch springs fitted to these 2014 models. The hydraulic clutch also does not require periodic adjustment or service, provides consistent engagement and modulation in all operating conditions, and provides consistent clutch-lever effort over the life of the vehicle. The 2014 Tri Glide Ultra is equipped with a new Assist and Slip (A&S) clutch. The Assist feature increases torque capacity at times of high demand while keeping lever efforts low. The Slip feature enables smooth downshifts and engine braking. Clutch lever effort on the Tri Glide is reduced by 23 percent.
•Reflex™ Linked Brakes with ABS: All 2014 Harley-Davidson Touring models are available with the new Reflex Linked Brakes with ABS as either Original Equipment or as a factory-installed option. Reflex Linked Brakes combine ABS with electronically linked brakes that dynamically optimize front/rear brake balance. Linked braking is activated when the motorcycle is above 20 to 25 mph. If braking is initiated at slower speeds the front and rear brakes function independently. When linked braking is active, applying the front, rear or both brake controls will apply braking force to both the front and rear brakes in a proportion determined by the Reflex Linked Brakes system to optimize performance. The braking will stay linked as speed drops below the 20-25 mph threshold. Reflex Linked Brakes incorporates ABS to further help the rider maintain control during braking events, especially those that happen in less-than-optimal conditions. Reflex Linked Brakes with ABS are Original Equipment on the 2014 Street Glide Special, Electra Glide Ultra Classic and Ultra Limited Harley-Davidson motorcycle models, and a factory-installed option on the Road King and Street Glide models.
•Tri Glide Ultra Linked Brakes: The new Tri Glide Ultra linked brake system allows the rider to apply both the front and rear brakes through the rear brake pedal. This is accomplished by actuating two pistons of each new six-piston front caliper when using the rear brake pedal. This provides more than 30 percent more brake responsiveness when the rear pedal is applied. The full front brake system is applied only through the front brake lever and remains independent. A new Tri Glide Ultra parking brake system uses a foot pedal on the rider’s left side to activate the rear parking brakes.
•Daymaker™ LED Lighting: The Daymaker LED headlight and Daymaker LED fog lamps deliver a lighting pattern that is highly focused with outstanding “punch” into the darkness. The light quality closely mimics that of natural daylight to further enhance visibility, and its bright-white color is conspicuous in traffic. The Daymaker headlamp has two D-shaped lenses: one that focuses light into a pool directly in front of the bike for outstanding low-beam illumination, and another separate high-beam projector that delivers a super-bright, focused beam to penetrate deep into the darkness. Daymaker LED lighting is Original Equipment on the 2014 Electra Glide Ultra Classic, Ultra Limited, and Tri Glide Ultra Harley-Davidson motorcycle models.
•Dual Halogen Lighting: The new Dual Halogen headlamp significantly outperforms a single-element halogen headlamp in high-beam situations because the low beam is also illuminated, increasing total lumens output. On high beam the Dual Halogen headlamp offers better punch and spread than the Daymaker LED headlamp, but does not offer the bright, white color quality of the LED. The Dual Halogen headlamp is paired with halogen fog lamps on models so equipped. Dual Halogen lighting is Original Equipment on 2014 Road King, Street Glide and Street Glide Special Harley-Davidson motorcycle models.
•Improved Front Suspension: All 2014 Harley-Davidson Touring models are equipped with new front suspension components, including larger fork sliders and stiffer triple clamps, that provide improved steering response. Fork diameter is increased from 43.1mm to 49mm (14 percent). The steering stem is supported by larger bearings. Suspension damping has been re-tuned for a smoother ride over minor pavement irregularities like tar strips.
