2012 KTM 250SX-F Review
The world champion concept
There can be no better proof of the supremacy of the 250 SX-F than three consecutive MX2 world championship titles. But that’s no reason for KTM to rest on its laurels. The new model is now available with a revamped chassis and an electric starter that proves its worth in many situations. Hence the smallest four-stroke in the KTM MX range continues to guarantee top finishes.
New for 2012 the 250 SX-F model is now equipped with Dunlop MX51 tires.
2012 KTM 250SX-F Features and Benefits
Engine
The compact, state-of-the-art DOHC four-stroke engine in the 250 SX-F is equipped as standard with an electric starter for the 2012 model year. Derived directly from the Marvin Musquin’s world championship bike, it excels with an extremely wide usable rev range and powerful performance from the bottom end up to beyond the nominal engine speed.
Valve train
In the cylinder head with two overhead camshafts, extremely lightweight, carbon-coated cam levers actuate four titanium valves. This elaborate valve train and ultra-light piston on the 250 SX-F allow the extremely short-stroke engine to rev up to 13,400 rpm.
Engine management (EMS)
The Keihin engine management system with electronic fuel injection ensures spontaneous responsiveness and maximum performance from the engine. Various engine characteristics can be activated with an optional map select switch.
Frame
The state-of-the-art frame on the 250 SX-F made from high-quality chrome-molybdenum steel is extremely light and torsion-resistant. It is also characterized by a particularly balanced geometry that combines playful handling with razor-sharp precision.
Swingarm with linkage suspension
The linkage rear suspension on the 250 SX-F bolsters accurate handling and extreme traction. The lightweight aluminum swingarm is designed for optimum lateral stiffness. The linkage system along with the WP shock absorber provides a very high progressive feel along with wide adjustment ranges.
Telescopic fork
The further improved upside-down telescopic fork incorporating closed-cartridge technology now ensures even greater punch with a somewhat tauter setting. At the same time, the WP fork with 48 mm (1.89 in) outer tube diameter boosts the precise handling of the 250 SX-F.
EMS
The Keihin engine management system with electronic fuel injection and electronic throttle valve control ensures spontaneous responsiveness and maximum performance from the engine. Various engine characteristics can be activated with an optional map select switch.
Electric starter
Years ago, KTM proved that an electric starter is very advantageous even in the tough sport of motocross. That’s why the 250 SX-F can now also be started at the press of a button. To lighten the load, the electric starter can be removed and a kick starter installed in its place.
Bodywork
The bodywork of the 250 SX-F with the very slim seat and radiator shrouds, plus excellent contact points, perfect the bike’s ergonomics, making handling even simpler and more precise.
