Victory for Delgado in thrilling Rally TT Mar de Olivos at Spanish Yamaha YXZ1000R Cup

The second round of the YXZ1000R Spanish Cup at the Rally TT Mar de Olivos delivered accomplished performances for the Yamaha YXZ1000R in the Stock and Open categories.

The fourth edition of the Rally TT Mar de Olivos promised thrilling competition and did not disappoint. Its 445 km of Special Stages pushed the mechanics of the racers to their limits. The YXZ1000R placed six of its seven Side-by-Sides in the top 15 of the category in the Spanish All Terrain Championship. Special mention should be made for the Stock category vehicles, which again proved very competitive and reliable and took the top positions in the overall classification throughout the weekend.

In the first race of the Stock category Pedro Delgado and Guifré Pujol repeated their victory of the Baja Almanzora, after a tough fight with Rafa Villanueva and Javier Prieto, while José Luis García and Xevi Moreno took the win in the Open category.

The highlight of the round took place on Saturday, with three non-stop laps of a 97 km loop starting and finishing at Peal de Becerro. At the end of the first stage Rafa Villanueva was placed second in the SxS category and first provisional position in the YXZ1000R Cup, with more than eight and a half minutes on Pedro Delgado.

However, Villanueva’s fortune changed on Sunday’s stage after he suffered a run-off when he was fighting for the victory and stopped for nearly 30 minutes. Pedro Delgado took advantage of this situation to recover lost time and take an accomplished victory in the YXZ1000R Stock category and second overall in the Side-by-Side class. Rafa Villanueva and his co-driver Javier Prieto managed to maintain second position of the Cup, while Edesio Caamaño and David Conde finished third.

In the Open category, victory went to José Luis García and Xevi Moreno. The Catalan duo suffered several problems on Saturday that cost them nearly an hour, but they made up for it on Sunday. In the same category, reserved to the Side-by-Sides with modifications, Yago de Prado and Álvaro Moya came second, while Jordi Serra and Iván Cano finished third.

The winners of both categories received a free registration for the next rally. José Luis García, who had already registered to compete in the next event in the Open class, made a gentlemanly gesture to Jordi Serra and Iván Cano, offering them his registration to compete again.

After the Rally TT Mar de Olivos Pedro Delgado and Guifré Pujol are leaders in the Stock category, while José Luis García and Xevi Moreno take the lead in the Open table. In the National Side-by-Side class Pedro Delgado and Guifré Pujol sit tied on points with Marc Duran and Pol Ros.

The Yamaha YXZ1000R Cup will continue with the thirteenth race of the season in the third round of the Spanish Cup at the Baja TT Dehesa de Extremadura, which will take place from June 7 to 9.
