2023 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT Totalmotorcycle.com Key Features

Adventure bikes are super-popular these days, and it’s easy to see why. They let you ride just about anywhere. Plus, their upright seating and sensible riding position let you rack up the miles in comfort. But they face a challenge, too: they need to combine state-of-the-art touring and riding technology with total reliability.

And that’s why Honda Africa Twin models are so far out in front of all the rest. Technology? Check out things like Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™, and of course our available automatic DCT transmission. Reliability? Nobody even comes close to Honda there. Comfort? Hey, you’re talking about the people who build the Gold Wing. Off-road performance? Ever heard of the Baja 1000 or the Dakar Rally? All that expertise goes into every Africa Twin we build.

We’re offering four different Africa Twin models. Our standard Africa Twin is a great choice for serious off-road enthusiasts, with either a six-speed manual transmission or our optional DCT. For long-distance adventure touring, check out our two Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES models: They offer special features like electronically controlled suspension, an adjustable windscreen, larger fuel tank, heated grips, tubeless tires, and more. They too are available with either manual transmission or DCT. And every Africa Twin in our line features Android Auto this year, along with new control settings and a tasty new color choice.

2023 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT Totalmotorcycle.com Features and Benefits

Broad powerband
The CRF1100 Africa Twin’s 1,084 cc parallel-twin engine pulls hard from 2,500 rpm all the way to the redline. A 270-degree phased crankshaft and uneven firing interval give a distinctive sound and feel while helping to produce strong, linear power and instant response anywhere in the rev range.

Choose your transmission
The Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES is available with either a robust six-speed manual gearbox or an advanced, automatic shifting, six-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). DCT features four automatic modes that adjust the shift patterns to match your riding style or the conditions, and a manual mode that allows you to shift gears with triggers on the left handlebar. These triggers can also be used to override the automatic modes’ gear selection at any time.

Riding modes
The Africa Twin has four default riding modes: Tour, Urban, Gravel, and Off-Road, plus two customizable User modes to cover any riding condition or situation. Each of these modes presets power delivery, engine braking, ABS settings, and HSTC torque control.

Inertial Measurement Unit
At the heart of the Africa Twin’s elevated on- and off-road performance is a Bosch MM7.10 six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that measures six-axis of data and sends that information to other critical systems like HSTC, ABS, and wheelie control. These systems make adjustments in real-time to give you total control.

Cornering and incline detection
The six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) allows cornering and incline detection on DCT models. The IMU knows when the bike is cornering or on a steep incline and can adapt the gear shift pattern to give you better control and a more natural gear shift feel.

Assist Slipper Clutch
The aluminum clutch centre and pressure plate use assist cams to ease upshifts and slipper cams to prevent wheel lock-up during deceleration and downshifting.

Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC)
The Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) system comes with seven levels of torque control and an off setting. The IMU can determine when the rear-wheel starts to slip out and it will seamlessly modulate your torque control to keep you in that sweet spot during acceleration.

Wheelie control
The wheelie control system takes cues from the IMU to know when and how fast the front wheel is lifting and reacts accordingly. There are three levels of wheelie control, plus the ability to turn it off.

Exhaust Control Valve
The exhaust system incorporates a variable Exhaust Control Valve (ECV) similar to the unit fitted to the CBR1000RR. It enhances both engine performance and efficiency as it opens at higher rpm and gives a pleasing exhaust-note ‘pulse’ at lower revs.

Capable and comfortable
The strength and rigidity balance of the steel semi-double-cradle frame helps to boost off-road ability while also reinforcing all-round on-road manners. The Africa Twin is engineered to handle the most rugged off-road adventures while providing the comfort of a touring motorcycle and the everyday competence of a great all-rounder or day-to-day commuter.

Aluminum components
A bolt-on aluminum subframe and aluminum swingarm help to reduce weight for improved handling and manoeuvrability.

Total control
To ensure a perfect fit for riders of different sizes, the Africa Twin boasts a two-position seat (870 mm standard and 850 mm in the low position) with an easy reach to the handlebar and a comfortable upright riding position. Standing or sitting, the Africa Twin keeps you in control.

Electronic suspension
The Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES and Adventure Sports ES DCT are equipped with SHOWA EERA® (Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment) electronically controlled suspension. You can choose between five suspension damper settings: hard, medium, soft, and off-road, as well as a customizable “user” setting. It’s easy to switch between them, too, so you can choose one for the highway and another when the going gets rougher.

ABS brakes
The Africa Twin’s ABS system works in conjunction with the IMU by compiling speed, deceleration, and lean angle data to prevent rear-wheel lock-up or rear wheel lift. This makes sure you can stop quickly and keep both wheels planted on the ground. There are on- and off-road settings, and rear ABS can be turned off in certain settings.

Take it with you
The Africa Twin comes equipped with a sturdy aluminum rear rack with built-in passenger grab rails, providing a secure location to strap on a weekend- or a weeks-worth of gear.

Improved protection
Designed for the long-haul, the expanded front fairing offers plenty of wind and weather protection, aided by the five-step height-adjustable windscreen and heated grips. The screen position and height have now been optimized for improved visibility and protection.

Multi Information Display
The Multi Information Display (MID) 6.5-inch TFT touch screen keeps you in control of the Africa Twin’s systems, including riding modes, suspension settings, HSTC, wheelie control, and ABS settings. The touchscreen is easy to use even when wearing gloves.

LED headlights and cornering lights
High-set dual LED headlights deliver a penetrating beam, and, for additional security, feature three-stage cornering lights that use speed and lean angle (controlled by the IMU) to automatically adjust illumination when cornering.

Smart turn signals
The front and rear turn signals are self-cancelling, but rather than using a simple timer, the system compares front and rear wheel speed difference and calculates when you’ve completed your turn or lane change.

Apple CarPlay(TM) and Android Auto
Both Apple CarPlayTM and Android Auto are now available with the use of a Bluetooth headset. Music, phone calls and navigation can be accessed through the touchscreen display or via handlebar controls. The phone plugs into a USB charging port on the right of the MID, or hands-free wireless Bluetooth connectivity is also an option.

Cruise control
Cruise control is a standard feature on the Africa Twin, making those long straights between trails all the more comfortable.
