2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S Totalmotorcycle.com Features and Benefits

Revolutionizing the big capacity Adventure segment with the introduction of the KTM 1190 ADVENTURE back in 2013, KTM has used all the feedback collected throughout these past years to craft the newest and latest bench-setting entry at the top of the expanding KTM ADVENTURE range.

Continuously looking for ways to enhance and improve the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S riding experience, the development of this third generation of big Travel-Enduro bikes focused on three central objectives and introduced a stream of new components and modifications.

#1 REDESIGNED ERGONOMICS FOR OPTIMUM RIDEABILITY
Focusing on keener handling, the new KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S introduces a chassis overhaul that enhances weight distribution and riding agility. A sharper cornering sensation is achieved by moving steering head of the trellis frame back by 15 mm and re-locating the front section of the engine. Additionally, the longer swingarm contributes to a more stable feeling under acceleration. Made from lightweight forged aluminum elements, the new subframe has been crafted to provide a lower seat height without sacrificing practicality.

Surrounding the rider is a new 6.1-gallon, three part fuel tank and a set of bodywork that augment the bike’s agile feeling. Every centimeter of the new bodywork has been analyzed in order not to impede the riding sensation. Providing additional comfort for the long rides, the new seat is adjustable by 20 mm. Also customizable are the handlebar levers, the gear shifter and brake pedal, the seat, the all-new TFT and the windshield that can be moved by 55 mm.

#2 GROUND-BREAKING TECHNOLOGY THAT BOOSTS PERFORMANCE
The KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S introduces an innovative Adaptive Cruise Control system as standard for 2021. Developed in collaboration with Bosch, the radar-based system automatically adjusts the distance to traffic ahead according to five stages that can be set with the re-designed handlebar switches. The riding experience is further enhanced with the brand new 7″ TFT display that is hooked to a new Connectivity Unit for seamless smartphone pairing.

The larger dashboard view has quicker and more practical menu systems as well as clear aesthetic infographics to clearly indicate various sections of the bike. To communicate with the new display, the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S comes with all-new switches on both sides of the handlebar, which offer a new and more seamless user experience. A new set of quick select and favorites switches will allow for set-up changes on the fly and while the rider stays focused on the roads ahead.

Additionally, a new 6-axis lean angle sensor is a crucial element of the advanced MSC, the cornering dependent ABS and the MTC. The sensor allows the ABS and traction control to give the rider better, clear feedback while boosting their confidence in braking or acceleration.

The Cornering ABS and Offroad ABS systems are products of the new Bosch Motorcycle Stability Control.

#3 PREMIUM COMPONENTRY ENHANCING THE RIDING EXPERIENCE
The heart of the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S is the updated V-twin. Now coming in a lighter form thanks to thinner engine cases and a new oil circuit. The engine breathes through an upgraded two-headed exhaust and shifts with a revised PANKL gear mechanism that brings big improvements in the optional Quickshifter+. The two new radiators work with the redesigned bodywork to channel warm air away from the rider’s legs. 15,000 km service intervals and low fuel consumption round-off the re-energized powerplant.

A new generation of WP APEX Semi-Active Technology, suspension boasts augmented damping thanks to new valves while the 6D lean angle sensor inputs directly into the unit for a thorough outline of rider behavior.

The new bodywork is matching perfectly with the updated design to highlight aesthetically this new generation of high-performance KTM ADVENTURE machinery.

ENHANCED FRAME: The chrome-molybdenum stainless steel trellis frame is a distinctive mark of the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S. The laser cut and robot welded chassis on the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S weighs just 22 lb and accommodates the compact and condensed LC8 powerplant, which had been rotated forward by two degrees at the swingarm axle and is held by new aluminum struts. A shorter frame has been forged thanks to a 15 mm rearward direction of the steering head. The result is even greater corner maneuverability and stability and better acceleration.

NEW SUBFRAME: Blending forged aluminum elements, the subframe is a newly-formed component of the chassis. For 2022 it has been extended by 15 mm to comply to the bikes’ new ergonomic demands. Lightweight yet strong to handle the demands of a pillion or luggage, it’s been crafted to provide a lower seat height. It additionally offers a practical storage space underneath it.

SEAT: The KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S uses two seats, one for the best ergonomics to suit rider and another for maximum comfort for the pillion. The height can be varied between 849 mm and 869 mm and the seat can be released with the touch of a button. Compared to its predecessor, the 2022 KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S places the rider 11 mm closer to the ground (in the lowest position), making the bike even more agile and allowing for a wider spectrum of riders to feel ‘at home’ on it. The KTM PowerParts collection for the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S means 11 different seats with a diverse spread of shape and size and thickness as well as a heated version

BODYWORK: Detailed analysis of the plastics and surfaces of the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S has been made to apply to best use of thicknesses and strength from back to front. Changes have been made to be even core minimal and to bring the rider closer to the center of the bike, trim weight and increase the notion that the motorcycle is the most maneuverable and agile SUPER ADVENTURE model yet. The all-new 6.1-gallon fuel tank has a three-cell design with two of the compartments laterally placed and the fuel cap is electronically opened. Wind tunnel-optimized and light handguards guarantee aerodynamic efficiency and element protection. Further down the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S, the cast wheels feature a set of Mitas TERRA FORCE-R tires that have been specifically developed for this bike. A handy storage compartment is placed in front of the fuel cap to be easily accessible at all times.

WINDSHIELD: The windshield for the 2022 KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S is larger and redesigned for even more resistance and protection. Diligent wind tunnel work and CFD calculations led to the revised form that can be raised 55 mm higher and with two lateral ‘wheels’, meaning the adjustment can be made with either hand.

CUSTOMIZATION: Creating the best and most effective riding stance means placing the power to personalize firmly in the hands of the person  directly in the saddle. The tapered aluminum handlebar (anodized in black) can be fixed in two positions. The (newly shaped) clutch and brake handlebar levers are also adjustable, as are the gearshifter and rear brake levers, the angle of the TFT, the suspension and the seat.

WP SEMI-ACTIVE SUSPENSION (SAT): KTM and WP Suspension again set the bar in the motorcycle market with the up-to-minute generation of the WP ‘SAT’. The result? More sensitivity, feedback and possibilities for personalization, even on-the-go. Reach a new standard of comfort and improve the overall riding experience thanks to the updated Suspension Control Unit (SCU) that adjusts the damping rates with magnetic valves in real-time to react to surfaces and rider input.

Stroke sensors form the basis of this advanced kit that is fully tunable from the comfort of the TFT display and handlebar switches where the rider can make adjustments for both the front and rear units individually (optional Technical Accessory). There are three different damping modes: COMFORT, STREET and SPORT as well as OFFROAD and AUTO as optional extras; all using the copious data provided by the 6-axis lean angle sensor and the riding style.

The KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S uses a 48 mm (200 mm of travel) WP APEX SAT fork that features an engageable (optional) anti-dive function, thus keeping the front from diving under hard braking. One innovative highlight of the SAT technology is the automatic damping mode, which adapts the damping according to the riding style and conditions. The electronically controlled, automatic damping option is an innovative feature developed by KTM and WP.

The rear end uses the WP APEX SAT shock absorber (200 mm of wheel travel) with a completely new hydraulic pre-load adjuster that is also manipulated electronically. The shock profits from a sensor delivering information to the SCU for automatic preload adjustment of the spring to achieve the ideal balance (sag) of the bike, independent of weight. The preload can be adjusted by 20 mm on the 2022 KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S, which is an added 10 mm over its predecessor.

In addition, the spring preload of the rear suspension can be set via the menu in 10 steps according to the requirements of the rider or in three automatic modes called auto leveling (optional TA) in low, standard high. The setting can be performed on the fly or while riding.

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL: Another first for KTM and specific to the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S is the ‘ACC’ that comes into its own on long outings. Designed to let the rider breeze through the transit while keeping them ready to strike whenever possible, the ACC – developed with Bosch – uses radar technology to regulate the distance to traffic ahead. Activated over 30 km/h and in second gear and up to 150 km/h once engaged, it will substantially reduce the effort needed by rider over large trips and in controlled conditions.

The distance can be set in five stages: Very short, Short, Middle, Long and Very long and in both Comfort and Sport characteristics. The intelligence of the software adds special dynamics such as an ‘overtake assist’ (a short burst of acceleration to aid lane changes and passing) and cornering, as well as accommodating gear changes (with the Quickshifter+ or the conventional use of the clutch) without deactivation. The system is disengaged when
the riders touches either the front or the rear brake.

The traditional Cruise Control option is operated by the new handlebar ‘paddles’ and can be used independently. The new ACC system uses the brakes for effective pace control on descents.

6-AXIS LEAN ANGLE SENSOR: A new 6-axis lean angle sensor is here to offer a largely improved riding behavior. The hardware plays a key role in the bike’s behavior by monitoring the position of the motorcycle at all times and before applying brakes or adding acceleration. The new sensor is essential for the seamless function of the groundbreaking Motorcycle Stability Control and the Cornering ABS. RIDER AIDS: The KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S benefits from re-worked and upgraded riding modes to enrich the connection and feeling between the rider, motorcycle and surface. The feedback from the powerfu LC8 has never felt more responsive and tactile but also smoother and more natural. KTM have refined the Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC) to make it more predictable and more intuitive. The KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S offers RAIN (maximum traction control, gentle throttle response and limited power), STREET (the default setting with full power, medium traction control, standard throttle, mild engine braking), SPORT (full power, direct throttle response, softer traction control to allow more wheelspin, maximum acceleration), OFFROAD (similar to RAIN but with a degree of wheelspin and rear wheel slip to best suit gravelly or slick terrain). There is also an optional RALLY mode. RALLY permits the rider to peg the amount of wheelspin according to nine different levels, set the degree of throttle response from smooth to aggressive while restricting wheelie control parameters. RALLY opens a desirable aspect of the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S for riders that love that loose feeling of control on the dirt and want to explore the full handling capabilities of their adventuring machine.

TFT DASHBOARD & CONNECTIVITY UNIT: Gaze upon the brand new 7″ TFT display that can be tilted to different angles, is scratch and glare resistant and showcases a more accessible menu system with clear infographics of the motorcycle and the effects of the applied settings and changes. Riders can define four ‘favorites’ for the home screen of the dash for fast viewing of their presets. Full and changeable information is displayed depending on the Ride Mode and the level of associated customization. The TFT comes with a new Connectivity Unit to ensure fast and reliable synchronization with a Bluetooth device and the KTM MY RIDE app for turn-by-turn navigation, music and incoming calls. The new TFT is the place where all setting for suspension, ACC, MTC and ABS can be adjusted. The TFT will also show data of the newly adjustable Tire Pressure Monitor System.

HANDLEBAR SWITCHES: Surfing through the menus of the TFT and all the possibilities of the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S is now simpler and quicker thanks to the redesigned handlebar switches. KTM continue to work on this crucial facet of the rider’s ‘interface’ with the motorcycle to find the best compromise of practicality and efficiency. New paddles will make Cruise Control settings even easier to instigate while two programmable switches mean more frequent control requests can be selected even faster. A new set of quick select and favorites switches will allow for set-up changes on the fly by providing quick access to the right menu pages.

KTM RACE ON: Another example of how KTM have augmented the sophistication of the 2022 KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S comes with the state-of-the-art transponder based keyless system called ‘KTM RACE ON’ that features ARA (Anti Relay Attack) technology. ARA provides extra security by needing to be activated before starting the ignition of the bike.

There is a 10 minute window between activation and ignition, allowing enough time for final preparation before entering the saddle. If the KTM
is not fired-up in that time frame then the ARA deactivates and so do the keyless functions of the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S. A 5 minute
‘suspend mode’ comes into play when the bike is stopped during a ride, allowing time for refueling or a traffic issue before ARA needs to be disengaged once more through a button press on the transponder, which can be kept in a part of the rider’s kit or safety attire. The ARA system can also be completely disengaged.

A new KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S for 2022, therefore a new look. The bike carries the latest evidence of KTM design-thinking with the reduced yet sporty aspect immediately obvious for the latest generation of KTM’s peerless traveler. The reduced frontal area of the bike and the narrower profile are examples of the desire for more agility and the tighter connection between rider and the road ahead.

The 2022 KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S carries and an even more premium aesthetic. The motorcycle wears its rally origins but also screams ‘readiness’ and is a solid, quality invitation to a wider world waiting for safe, practical and thrilling discovery.

KEY DESIGN UPGRADES INCLUDE:
New profile and graphics emphasizing Rally genesis and heritage New fuel tank and bodywork refashioned for efficiency, thickness, strength and functionality. A redesigned shape to allow more movement, closer proximity, deeper feeling, sensitivity and comfort 11 different types of KTM PowerPart Ergo seat to suit any rider or preference Blends of aluminum (subframe, handlebars and new side-stand) and steel (chassis) for important weight-saving purposes but also distinct KTM look New wider beam, brighter LED headlight

LED HEADLIGHT: KTM’s LED lights system is compact, reliable and powerful and the 2022 KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S counts on a new headlight that provides a wider beam, good daylight performance and integrated cornering detection. The unit has been redesigned to both accommodate the front radar sensor and to give the 2022 KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S a new ‘face’. The rear taillight has also been modified for those riders that want the full lighting package.

The Automatic turn indicator reset facility stays in place with the new KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S. MITAS TERRA FORCE-R TIRES: KTM ran numerous and lengthy tests to find the most effective set of tires for the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S. After running various types and brands through the desired criteria for the new model, the Mitas TERRA FORCE-R emerged as the best selection for sturdiness and excellent grip.

SIDE STAND: The KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S features a new aluminum side stand for quick and easy motionless bike positioning. The component achieves the goal of weight-saving and adds to the motorcycle’s aesthetic.

QUICKSHIFTER+: The KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S is primed for the optional Quickshifter+. The dual sensor system has been overhauled for improved functionality in all conditions even if the central advantages of the technology remain the same: short shift times, more stability thanks to the clutch-less actions, less load reversal impact on the rear wheel, better traction and physical control.

Cooling

The KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S now features 2 separate radiators instead of a one-piece unit. The result is better heat dissipation, and improved cooling all-round. Cleverly designed air ducts now also stream cool air towards the engine, not only keeping the motorcycle cool, but the rider’s legs cool too.

Engine

With a sledgehammer hit of power and earth-twisting torque, the proven V-twin LC8 engine once again takes the accolades as the most compact, lightest, and best performing engine in the segment. Its greener too, and will deliver 15,000 km service intervals and low fuel consumption, trip after trip, mile after mile.

Transmission

Helping the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S shift – in more ways than one – is a 6-speed PANKL transmission with a new, lighter aluminum shifting drum with optimized tracks for faster, smoother gear changes. Shifting forks have also been coated in copper to reduce wear and tear. This also helps the Quickshifter+ engage quicker for ultra-fast, slick gear changes.

PASC Clutch

Not only does the slipper clutch open when the engine back-torque becomes too high, it also assists when you open up the throttle. The former prevents destabilizing rear wheel chatter when braking sharply or decelerating; the latter reduces the lever force required for changing gears, allowing the clutch to be controlled with one trigger happy finger – saving you energy while riding.

Cylinder heads

A key element in the smooth power delivery of the 75° V-twin is each cylinder’s state-of-the-art 4-valve DOHC cylinder head. These combine twin plug ignition, flow-optimized ports and a slick low-friction valve drive train with cams from each cylinder’s twin overhead camshafts driving DLC-coated cam followers.

DLC coating

Diamond-Like Carbon – or DLC for short – is an extremely hard, durable coating used in many engine parts, such as cam followers, to assist sliding behavior. It improves performance and our engines love it!

Twin ignition

The twin plug ignition system controls the two differently sized spark plugs in each cylinder head independently of each other. This results in improved combustion and a smoother, optimally controlled combustion sequence. What that means to you, is better-controlled power, lower fuel consumption, and reduced emissions.

Pistons

The pistons in the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S are forged, and are derived from Formula 1 technology. The result is a high loading capacity despite its extremely short and lightweight design. The piston skirts have an additional state-of-the-art, Grafal® finish. It further reduces friction and is particularly hard wearing.

Crankshaft

The extremely low crankshaft reciprocating weight enhances the responsiveness and free-revving nature of the engine. With a flow-optimized crank web shape, the particularly low-loss running of the crank drive is further enhanced.

Overdrive

The sixth gear serves as a long overdrive in the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S’s well-spaced gearbox. This saves fuel and adds to your cruising comfort.

Ride-by-wire

Smooth throttle response is what you get, beyond simply being free of a throttle cable, which is why the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S’s ride-by-wire system is so attractive. It ensures perfect dosage of the readily available and plentiful torque, while electronically translating rider throttle commands into throttle valve positions, which are perfectly adjusted to suit different riding conditions.

Long service intervals

With a 15,000 km service interval, adventure riders can head off into the wilderness with complete confidence. This comes courtesy of a unique mix of the highest quality components combined with a fully developed, proven, and reliable engine.

Power-to-weight-ratio

The combination of lightweight chassis engineering and a compact, powerful engine take the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S to the top of its class in terms of power-to-weight ratio and ride dynamics. The result is one of the lightest, and best performing adventure motorcycles in its segment.

Exhaust

Providing the bark for the bite, the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S features a completely reworked exhaust system. Two new headers lead the exhaust gas to a hydroformed collector chamber with two catalytic converters. These, in conjunction with 3 lambda sensors allow the emissions to stay within the latest limits. Meanwhile, at the business end, a newly designed stainless-steel silencer provides a typically v-twin tone.

Airfilter

Thanks to a reworked airbox, riders can now easily access the air filter by simply removing 4 screws to remove the storage compartment ahead of the fuel filler cap. Also, the filter itself now features vertical ribs, instead of horizontal. which helps direct dust or sand towards the bottom of the air box, without getting sucked into the filter slats. Overall, a better design for hardcore adventurers.

The latest ABS and MTC (Motorcycle Traction Control) technology is designed to enhance your riding experience. Different ride modes are tailored for easy adjustment of the rider aid functions to suit a range of riding conditions. The simple adjustability of these features maximizes the powerful V-twin’s innovative technology and equipment across a much wider range of terrain.

MSC with C-ABS

BOSCH’s MSC assistance package is the world’s first lean-angle sensitive cornering ABS system. It allows riders to always use the full power of their brakes while the system adjusts brake pressure to match the lean angle of the motorcycle, for more predictable braking across a wider range of conditions and scenarios. If required, not only can it be switched off, but also placed in “Offroad mode”.

TPMS

A crucial part of your adventure ride is, arguably, your tire pressure. Thankfully, the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S is fitted with a TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) which monitors front and rear tire pressure and displays it on the TFT for easy viewing. Should there be any pressure loss, a warning will display on the dash.

MTC

Lean-angle-sensitive Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC) reacts to any disproportionate slippage of the rear wheel. This is done via two separate controllers, reading wheel-slip and pitch respectively, making calculations and adjustments in milliseconds. The result? Both straight-line acceleration and cornering efficiency are unhindered with power reduction less abrupt – even when the front wheel lifts off the deck. Want to take the power into your own hands? MTC can be turned off for hardcore offroad adventure.

ATIR

Failure to indicate is one thing. Forgetting to cancel your turn indicator is another. Thankfully, the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S is fitted with an Automatic Turn Indicator Reset or ATIR. After 10 seconds of movement and 150 meters of riding distance, the turn indicator will reset automatically. A big improvement in terms of safety, as it is now impossible to forget to reset the indicators.

Offroad Ride Mode

The real adventure starts when the tarmac ends. For that, we give you OFFROAD MODE. Once engaged, ride-by-wire smooths out the throttle response and limits peak power output to better suit offroad conditions. This means riders can lock the rear wheel with the rear brake- a prerequisite for committed offroad riding and deliberately executed slides – while allowing some wheel spin out of corners. Most importantly, the rider is able to hoist the front wheel over obstacles. The rider can also activate the Offroad ABS function to get optimal control in offroad conditions while maintaining front ABS intervention.

Offroad Traction Control

OFFROAD TRACTION CONTROL allows a certain slippage at the rear wheel. This is for those moments when you want full control, without any unwanted interference mastering controlled drifts.

Offroad ABS

In this mode, three things happen – ABS functionality is deactivated on the rear wheel but maintains some ABS functionality of the front wheel, rear-wheel lift-up detention is disabled, and cornering ABS is disabled. All this together means riders have complete control offroad with confidence. For advanced riders, it allows them to push harder before there is any ABS interference.

KTM MyRide

There won’t be any Wi-Fi where you’re going, but with the KTM MY RIDE system, you’ll still have a connection to your smartphone. Syncing via Bluetooth, KTM MY RIDE allows you to access your phone, giving you access to incoming calls, your music library, and turn-by-turn navigation right on your TFT display. More info can be found at www.ktm.com/my-ride.

Dashboard

Taking charge at the helm is an all-new scratch-resistant 7-inch TFT display. Unmatched in terms of graphics and readability, adventurers can access information and make adjustments to the bike’s semi-active suspension on the fly, quickly and easily without navigating complex menus. This comes thanks to a 6-way switch cube on the handlebar. Connectivity is also taken care of by way of KTM MY RIDE, which connects via Bluetooth for turn-by-turn navigation, playing music, and even answering incoming calls. Still catching glare? The TFT screen is tilt-angle adjustable.
