KTM SHOW OFF NEW TRIPLE MODEL THREAT AT EICMA 2019

KTM revealed their latest innovations on the first day of the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, Italy. The company unveiled three brand new models – the 2020 KTM 1290 Super Duke R, the 2020 KTM 890 DUKE R, and the 2020 KTM 390 ADVENTURE – as well as displaying their full gamut of motorcycles for 2020 across a busy exhibition stand. Pride of place was reserved for KTM’s outstanding achievements in the world of racing with the KTM 450 RALLY, the KTM 250 SX-F, the KTM 300 EXC TPI and the KTM RC16 (MotoGP™) prominent.

The KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R has been ‘re-Beasted’. KTM’s flagship bike has won rave reviews by catering for the preferences and skills of a vast range of motorcyclists and has undergone its most radical re-invention yet for 2020. A completely new chassis, styling, and electronics mean the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R has trimmed weight across the board, while a reworked LC8 engine has unleashed even more power.

KTM have beefed up their potency in the midweight segment with the new KTM 890 DUKE R. Foregoing some of the excellent daily capabilities of its younger brother – the KTM 790 DUKE – the KTM 890 DUKE R is a sportier and edgier naked bike for hard riding. More power and more torque come from the new engine, which has been teamed with ‘racier’ ergonomics, better brakes, and fully adjustable WP APEX suspension. The KTM 890 DUKE R is ideal for the motorcyclist wanting a more extreme experience or searching for bigger thrills and ‘flickability’ compared to a larger capacity model.

The new KTM 390 ADVENTURE has harnessed the attributes and DNA from the popular and highly rated KTM 790 ADVENTURE as well as the development information gleaned from nearly two decades of Dakar Rally success. A breezy, agile, and ideal entry model for riders keen to discover the ‘adventure’ sensation, this motorcycle offers added versatility for touring and light offroading. Using elements of the KTM 390 DUKE as a base, the KTM 390 ADVENTURE offers proximity to the feeling and performance found at the root of the all-conquering KTM 450 RALLY but with crucial A2 license compatibility and current Euro emissions standards as part of the package.

KTM welcomes a ninth consecutive year of growth and another sales record in 2019 while continuing to pursue an even greater global market share and further consolidation as Europe’s leading manufacturer. KTM will also be seeking to build on the strengths of their dealer network and international strategic partnerships.

After a grand opening this summer, the work, innovation, and history of the brand is now fabulously displayed in a visual and interactive manner at KTM’s new Motohall, located in Mattighofen. Mr. Trunkenpolz, together with KTM Motorsport Director Pit Beirer, also took time to reference the impact and importance of MotoGP™ and the firm’s presence at the elite level of racing as the conclusion of a third season in Grand Prix draws near.

There was considerable interest in a number of other motorcycles, especially the new KTM SX-E 5; an adjustable and versatile junior electric bike that has the potential to introduce a vast fresh generation to the buzz of riding.

In what is now customary fashion, KTM celebrated their competitive triumphs for the year. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team earned their 18th Dakar success as well as the FIM Cross Country Rallies World Championship with two different riders. The KTM 450 SX-F was the basis for Cooper Webb’s rookie AMA 450SX Championship win and victories for Tony Cairoli, Jeffrey Herlings, and Glenn Coldenhoff in MXGP. Spanish sensation Jorge Prado used the KTM 250 SX-F to accumulate a record amount of Grand Prix holeshots and won his second consecutive MX2 title. KTM recently launched the KTM 450 SX-F CAIROLI and KTM 250 SX-F PRADO limited editions in recognition of their feats.

Back on the slicks, the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing made fantastic progress in MotoGP™ with four bikes on the premier class grid, two front row starts, and a slew of top ten results from the 19 rounds of a season that is still delivering thrills. Moto2™ and Moto3™ victories were acknowledged and celebrated.

KTM announced that the fourth instalment of the unique European KTM ADVENTURE RALLY will take place in Greece during June 2020. A KTM ADVENTURE RALLY is the company’s scheme for Adventure riders who want to fully embrace the KTM READY TO RACE spirit and share offroad experiences in incredible surroundings to form unforgettable memories with like-minded motorcyclists – including KTM Ambassadors, factory riders, and staff.

KTM look to 2020 with great optimism. The surge of almost 10 years of expansion shows no signs of slowing as the company evolves their R&D activities and output for both STREET and OFFROAD markets, fueled by their peerless racing endeavors. They will look to further consolidate their position as the continent’s #1 manufacturer while also exploring other areas of global growth.

2020 KTM 1290 Super Duke R Totalmotorcycle.com Features and Benefits

ENGINE & EXHAUST
Legend has it, if you walk through the streets of Mattighofen at full moon, you can hear its roar. Ok, so we made that part up, but there is no denying the 1301 cc V-twin’s legendary status. Now even lighter and more powerful than before, this torquey powerhouse has been built to take on anything you’re brave enough to throw at it.

ENGINE
HEART OF THE BEAST
If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it. But by all means, make it meaner! Boasting increased horsepower and torque, the 1301 cc LC8, V-Twin has undergone a subtle yet impactful development. Optimized to be lighter but retaining its torquey character, this powerhouse is the benchmark of V-twin evolution. And with new engine and linkage mounts that add to the overall structure of the entire package – it quite literally is the part that holds THE BEAST together.

Optimized to be lighter but retaining its torquey character, this powerhouse is the benchmark of V-twin evolution. And with new engine and linkage mounts that add to the overall structure of the entire package – it quite literally is the part that holds THE BEAST together.

ENGINE CASE
Thinner engine casings and revised water and oil cooler mounts have resulted in a 0.8 kg (1.7 lbs) weight saving. Oil delivery has also been improved by way of a lightweight aluminum oil line, eliminating the need for a double wall system. Additionally, the engine carrier bracket and linkage mount have been integrated into the engine case, allowing for a stiffer connection. This has also resulted in a 5 mm higher swingarm pivot for improved stability and anti-squat.

INJECTORS
New topfeeder injectors and 56 mm throttle bodies provide an improved air to fuel mixture at high rpms. This results in more torque and better fuel economy throughout the rev range.

GEARBOX
You don’t always need big changes to make big differences. In fact, when it comes to the PANKL gearbox, we’ve made a few small tweaks which have resulted in quicker shift times, shorter shift action and lighter lever modulation. Smoother shift action also comes courtesy of an improved spline shaft and bronzed copper coating on the shift forks. Why do all this? Quite simply – quicker shift times equal faster acceleration.

EXHAUST
This is not a case of “bark being worse than bite” – this BEAST roars! Up to 60 mm of drainpipe-like dimensions at the headers optimize gas flow, while 2 catalytic converters control emissions, without compromising the V-twin engine note or horsepower.

AIRFILTER
To perform like a BEAST, the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R needs to breathe like a BEAST. Thanks to an all-new ram air intake positioned in the new headlight mast, this rip snorting arrangement maximizes airflow into an all-new CFD optimized airbox with new, smaller resonator chambers. This arrangement maximizes flow by forcing air into the combustion chambers. This in turn reduces the chance of low air pressure and increases the fuel burn rate. The addition of a newly designed and easy-to-access air filter box makes for easy servicing too.

CHASSIS
At the core of the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R is a major chassis overhaul. Boasting an all new frame with 3 times the torsional rigidity of previous models, stickier tires, smarter WP suspension, an aluminum and carbon composite subframe and completely revised geometry, the king of the DUKES has become lighter, stiffer and faster.

FRAME
A new frame concept, which uses the engine as a means to increase torsional rigidity, has resulted in the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R being 3 times stiffer than its predecessor. This allows for an effortless, confidence-inspiring riding position which translate into an ultimately faster ride. This is achieved by maximizing the feedback from the chassis and the front tire. The frame also makes use of wider diameter tubes with thinner walls, which is the single biggest weight saving measure on the bike – saving 2 kg compared to the previous model.

SUBFRAME
Multi-dexterity is the name of the game when it comes to this BEAST’s tail. An all-new and lighter composite subframe combines a number of functions to save weight and increase functionality. The passenger seat, license plate holder and taillights bolt directly onto the subframe structure with no additional brackets or attachments needed.

SWINGARM
To increase feel and traction, a longer single-sided swingarm has been repositioned closer to the output sprocket for more control when putting the power down. The means the pivot-point has been moved, improving overall geometry and travel.

SUSPENSION
Think of the suspension elements on THE BEAST as the muscles that work to get the power to the ground in the best way possible. Every component has been considered to improve the handling, adjustability and performance.

FRONT FORK
Lighter and fully adjustable WP APEX forks feature split function compression and rebound settings. This allows riders to fine-tune the front end for full-blown apex attacks, or to achieve perfect plushness for long hours on the road. And if that isn’t enough to find the razor-edge of handling, adjustable preload settings will help you find the ultimate front-end stance.

SHOCK ABSORBER
The newly developed WP APEX rear shock absorber features separate gas and oil reservoirs, making it lighter and more compact than its predecessor. It is also fully adjustable, with individual high- and low-speed adjusters and a ‘no-tools-needed’ manual preload dial for the ultimate in rear shock set-up.

WHEELS
ROLLING THUNDER
These wheels didn’t just happen by the grace of a designer’s pen – they are the product of a sophisticated CAD system, which determines the best shape in terms of strength and lightness. What that means is that these wheels are engineered down to the finest detail, they are lighter than before and look great.

TIRES
Brand-new BRIDGESTONE S22 tires – 120/70/17 in the front and 200/55/17 in the rear – have been specifically developed for the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R. Featuring a fine-particle silica compound, they offer much-improved grip in wet weather conditions, making for exceptional characteristics on the road but also phenomenal handling on the track.

BRAKES
DROP THE ANCHORS
Reigning in THE BEAST comes courtesy of 4-piston BREMBO Stylema monobloc calipers clamping onto 320 mm floating discs up front, and a twin piston floating caliper biting a 240 mm disc at the rear.

ERGONOMICS & COMFORT
We won’t mince words here – the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R has been sculpted for spirited performance riding without compromising rider comfort. A restyled tank gives the rider better support, while lower, variable handlebars and adjustable foot pegs make for improved comfort on the road and more control on the track.

HANDLEBAR
GRAB THE REIGNS
Finding the optimal seating position is made easy with an adjustable 760 mm wide handlebar. Riders can tailor their preferred reach with 4 positions over 21 mm, front to back, making it easy to attack corners and crucial for hanging on down the straights.

MENU SWITCH
The 2020 KTM 1290 Super Duke R boasts an all-new TFT dashboard with increased functionality. To access this, a great deal of testing was done to develop robust and intuitive motorcycle switchgear, which incidentally pushes all the right buttons. Riders can now adjust the wheel slip easily via paddle buttons on the switchgear, while in TRACK MODE, or can set two programmable switches for fast access to favored features or setting of their choosing.

HAND LEVERS
Hydraulic brake and clutch levers make for easy one-finger operation, while full reach adjustability ensures they are within easy grasp of even the most reach-challenged riders.

SEATS
PERFORMANCE WITHIN COMFORT
There’s no doubting THE BEAST’s performance credentials. But that doesn’t mean riders have to sacrifice long-distance comfort either. While the 2020 KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R is at home on the track, it’s a naked street bike first. This means passenger comfort has been thoroughly thought-out and has been designed to allow for real-world, 2-up riding.

FOOTPEGS
DRAGGING PEGS AND TAKING NAMES
Big lean angles come as standard, thanks to smart positioning of the foot pegs, which also allow for comfort on the road. However, further refinement is also possible with two positons, which lift the pegs higher and further backwards for a more aggressive stance. And as can be expected, the gear shift pattern can be easily reversed to a 5 down, 1 up arrangement for full BEAST MODE track attacks. Shift and brake levers are fully adjustable too.

BODYWORK & GRAPHICS
Purposefully uncovered, the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R has been designed to be a naked bike from the ground up – not a stripped back sports bike. As such, the brief was clear; maintain the iconic BEAST character, but push the limits of weight saving.

BODYWORK
NAKED BY DESIGN
There isn’t much to say about the bodywork of the new KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R as there is so little of it to talk about. But that’s exactly how we like it! Aggressive and menacing, the bodywork and panels had to achieve two objectives – tick all the ergonomic boxes and shave weight wherever possible. As such, every panel and plate has been calculated for optimum thickness and minimized where possible. The only thing that remained heavy was attitude.

AIR INTAKE
Almost mantis-like, the new LED headlight doubles as a ram air intake, with air being channelled between the lights, keeping them cool, and directly into the airbox, making for a more efficient burn. Besides looking great, the dual-functionality resulted in cleaner, more compact lines and less overall weight.

SHARP REAR END
Thanks to an all-new, lighter composite subframe, the passenger seat, license plate holder and taillights could be seamlessly incorporated into a neat rear end, which keeps a little sting in the tail.

TANK
Completely new and made of steel, the 16 litre (4.2 gal) fuel tank has been crafted to bulk up THE BEAST’s haunches. Also, the new shape and angle have been designed to support the rider on street and on the track.

GRAPHICS
There’s no mistaking that this is the meanest bike on the block. A high-quality application process has been used to ensure the signature ‘R’ graphics stay put and never fade, while contrasting colors, tones and textures set the muscled creases of the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R off perfectly.

SOFTWARE & ELECTRONICS
If you tried taming THE BEAST by grabbing it by the scruff of its neck and wrestling it into submission, you’d get bitten. For that reason, the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R wears an invisible muzzle to protect from heavy-handed petting. But for those few that can manhandle 1301 cc of pure fury, the muzzle can be removed at the flick of a switch.

LED HEADLIGHT
BEHIND THE MASK
While the all-new headlight mask doubles as an intake snorkel, it’s the twin LED headlights that really shine. Sharp, menacing lines enhance THE BEAST’s overall look, while providing ample illumination when it gets dark. Daytime running lights also ensure you will get noticed, which not only earns you kudos when it comes to street cred, but more importantly, makes you more visible to other road users.

TFT DISPLAY
RIDER PILOT COCKPIT
A new angle-adjustable 5 inch TFT screen takes center stage ahead of the rider, featuring a fresh design and innovative new functionality. An updated menu structure gives riders faster access to the various features and allows for more customization of preferred riding setups. The scratch resistant bonded glass display also helps to combat glare.

RIDER AIDS
MORE THAN SECURITY NETS
Many traditionalists might frown at the sight of electronic rider aids, saying they interfere with the purity of the ride. However, when it comes to the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R, all electronic features have received an update, providing more feedback from the engine, and less intrusiveness from the safety systems. This means improved Quickshifter+ settings, more refined and natural feedback and smoother, more intuitive anti-wheelie functions.

ACCESSORIES & LUGGAGE
Not enough for you? Well adding even more performance to this BEAST is only reserved for the brave! All KTM PowerParts are developed for their respective machines, meaning that KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R riders only get parts that perfectly complement their ride and provide the same ‘factory fit’ straight from the dealer – allowing you to refine your BEAST’s functionality, look and feel to better fit your personal needs.
