Organ Donation

I have been attending a regional symposium here in the SouthWest of England about organ donation within our national health service.

The research & medical innovations are amazing. The success rates when organs are transplanted are improving consistently.

As motorcyclists we are perhaps statistically more likely to end up in an intensive care unit with life ending injuries.

Please, if you are not yet registered in your own country as a potential donor, give it good consideration & potentially save up to 7 lives.

Also as a high risk group please discuss your wishes fully & frankly with your family.

The responsibility of health professionals in this field is always toward the care & best treatment options of the potential donor, but if your life is terminated by catastrophic accident maybe your loved ones could gain comfort in donation.

Make it easier for them & register yur intent in advance.

Well said MOG!

In Canada I was a regular blood donor (every 56 days) for many years. I felt it was the least I could do. And being O+ they just loved seeing me again and again. Unfortunately the Canadian Blood Services doesn't like when people live in the UK longer than 6 months (it's related to BSE concern) so I don't think I can donate anymore. I'm going to look into plasma donations instead of whole blood... maybe that will work!

I was looking into it last night! It's kind of sad, I'm already planning my life back in Canada yet it's still months away!!!

I became a donor when I got my CDL. Figure my chances of getting hurt are pretty hog when I drive 100,000 plus miles a year. If something happens I may need an organ. And if things are bad enough, maybe someone can use one of mine.

In South Africa if we carry a blood donor card and the paramedics see it, they will probably let us die and sell our organs to the highest bidder. Lots of our politicians need liver transplants

I'm definitely a donor. I figure I got some decent use out of everything, might as well let someone else have a go at 'em. Plus, my liver and lungs are bound to be better than most!

On a serious note tho.....even if it is true then technically carrying a card may save your life as a "high value" donor is only going to be "worth top dollar/rand" when sustained by hi tech intensive life support otherwise the organs will not be fit for transplant!

So you see even cynics could benefit from registering
