I'm also late on the band wagon but this all revolves around England apparently being the cats meow.

First the Celts held it, then the Romans come through, the germanic tribes thought they'd go at it and finally the french arrived. Four distinctly different languages blended in a small little region. If you think modern English is bad, look at middle or old English. That's enough to scare you.

Wonderful! But it is not so difficult for me. I think if you try to learn Chinese, you will find it is very difficult indeed.
