From a Sarajevo War Survivor:
Experiencing horrible things that can happen in a war - death of parents and
friends, hunger and malnutrition, endless freezing cold, fear, sniper attacks.

1. Stockpiling helps. but you never no how long trouble will last, so locate
near renewable food sources.
2. Living near a well with a manual pump is like being in Eden.
3. After awhile, even gold can lose its luster. But there is no luxury in war
quite like toilet paper. Its surplus value is greater than gold's.
4. If you had to go without one utility, lose electricity - it's the easiest to
do without (unless you're in a very nice climate with no need for heat.)
5. Canned foods are awesome, especially if their contents are tasty without
heating. One of the best things to stockpile is canned gravy - it makes a lot of
the dry unappetizing things you find to eat in war somewhat edible. Only needs
enough heat to "warm", not to cook. It's cheap too, especially if you buy it in
bulk.
6. Bring some books - escapist ones like romance or mysteries become more
valuable as the war continues. Sure, it's great to have a lot of survival
guides, but you'll figure most of that out on your own anyway - trust me, you'll
have a lot of time on your hands.
7. The feeling that you're human can fade pretty fast. I can't tell you how many
people I knew who would have traded a much needed meal for just a little bit of
toothpaste, rouge, soap or cologne. Not much point in fighting if you have to
lose your humanity. These things are morale-builders like nothing else.
8. Slow burning candles and matches, matches, matches

LOL!!

No, I was just reading the financial news today and came across this, many economics are a little worried about the US downgrade from AAA to AA+, a first in US history. I thought I'd throw this up here as it's interesting. (We do camp and some of this stuff isn't bad for camping).

P.S. The "Economic collapse!!What should be done to prepare?" wasn't my headline, it was the authors. haha.

You forgot to mention a small economical off road bike - surely a vital means of transport in that situation?

Methinks an older (non electronic) bike would be best as more easily fixed. What model do you guys think would be suitable?

I would also add seeds for veg & bread etc.
+ chickens
I remember my Mum & Dad saying they were glad to have been country based during WW11 as they could barter for eggs meat etc + poach for the pot.

You are only taking a loss if you sell.... However selling last week would have been a great get rich scheme. Nonetheless-from any crash comes great opportunty.

Definately. Although tell that to the stock owners of Nortell or Bre-X or even Microsoft. Nortell at $100 a share would have been a great buy when it was $145 before and at $10 a share even better till it went to $0.09 ... but I do agree with the idea of buying low, selling high, it's just the timing that is the tricky bit. haha. :D

Moot point really, we are all doomed to destruction on Dec. 12, 2012......baring that in mind, I will be wlling to buy any bikes, gold, and other assets you may wish to dispose of prior to the rapture or whatever up to midnight Dec. 12, 2012 GMT. Mind, since the world will be ending right after that, I can only fairly offer pennies on the dollar for these transactions. Any takers?
Always ask why.
