Ashbory Bass Guitar

I went down to the Musicians Friends warehouse to see if they had any Epiphone Dot Studio (Korean) or maybe a LP Junior but found one of these instead. You wouldn't think such a small package could produce such a large sound. I'm going to have some fun with this.

The Ashbory bass, designed by Alun Ashworth-Jones and Nigel Thornbory, is an 18-inch scale fretless (but marked) electric bass developed in 1985. This scale is just over half of the 34-inch scale of an ordinary bass guitar. When amplified, the Ashbory produces a low, resonant bass tone similar to the tone of a pizzicato (plucked) double bass.

The Ashbory uses silicone rubber strings and an acoustic piezo-transducer pickup to create the instrument's tone. The lower string tension of the instrument means that no truss rod is used in the Ashbory's neck. Unlike electric basses and electric guitars, neither the bridge nor the neck is adjustable. The manufacturer recommends that the silicone strings be dusted with talc powder to make the rubber strings easier to play.

That's cool man. I've got an early 80's vintage Westone Concord II Bass that I'm learning how to play. I'd really like to get a Westone Rail Bass, but those things are really hard to find, and very pricey when I can find one that's for sale.

You should have really called this thread: "Guitars, and the playing thereof:" :P
Guitar stores are dangerous but I have shown remarkable restraint over the years. There was a hollow-body acoustic-electric bass a the guitar shop last time I was there that was very tempting.... I ended up going home with a 3/4 Strat-mini for the kids instead. This thing is a blast, and a very close replica of my '79 American Strat that I've had ahem, for a while....since it was new, but I'm not old......

O.K., back to the original topic then.... (I didn't want to turn Johns thread into a "geezers with guitars" thread) I would love to try that Ashbory bass....so much so that I'm tempted to head to the guitar store.....
If they have been around since '85 they can't be that popular as this picture is the first one that I can recall seeing. How long have you been playing John? How 'bout you Buzz? :P

Back on topic....

I took up the bass in junior high. And except for the slight handicap of having absolutely NO rhythm and a tin ear, I would be a freakin' rock star right now. Since I'm not, you can probably guess how much I rock.... just like a box-a-rocks. :(
No Witnesses.... :shifty:

Alas I have no talent for playing the guitar. I do however enjoy scaring the neighbors or any stray animals in the vacinty. I started collecting guitars after my divorce, when my disposable income skyrocketed.

You guys must have child support (a good idea) or alimony (a bad idea) to pay. I just got rid of the bloodsucking wench.

Free, free, free at last.
