If the max pressure printed on the tire was lower than the manufacturer's recommendation, then you should not exceed the tire number. This may be what the mechanic was trying to say. However, in such a case the best solution would be to go to a different tire.

Maybe somebody here with a better grasp of the statistics than I have can illustrate this better, but my understanding is that you are about sixteen times more likely to get killed on a motorcycle than you are in a car ... You'll be fine. People crossed the great plains in covered wagons with less experience than you have.

Both bikes have enough power to cruise interstates without any trouble. The 650 will take a bit longer to get up to speed but still plenty fast enough for a 150 pounder.
