my mechanic showed me a good method.

he told me to just apply pressure on the shifter, then when i let go of the throttle, it should fall into the next gear. i tried it for both up and down shifting.

it works!

well at least most of the time.

i need to practice it more.

why not... just tweak the clutch?

half an inch is more than enough to smooth the shifting and make it still quick.

oh, i wasn't practicing it to be quick.

i was just practicing it for the sake of learning how to shift w/o the clutch.

anyway pro racers don't technically do clutchless shifting, right? isn't their shifter rigged to engage the clutch for them?

The point of it is to learn how to shift without the clutch. I case of emergency and you lose the clutch cable, you'll still need to limp home or somewhere safe to make repairs if you cannot do it on the side of the road.

Or in my case, you don't have a left hand to clutch with.

But, with clutchless shifting, timing is everything both for up and downshifts. Sometimes downshifting is harder to match the rpms. A nice blip of the throttle just before the clutchless downshift will match rpms enough the gear engages smoother.

Racers do use this clutchless upshifts with a pushbutton system. In racing it's done to reduce the human error (read: slower, less accurate shifts).

You'll have more problems than a broken clutch lever if you break your clutch lever.
