During a press conference in Tokyo, Honda executives said their airbag works best in a straight-angle frontal collision up to 31 mph
Don't get me wrong, that's all fine and dandy and would most definetely help you out...but what about crashes over, lets say, 45mph? And crashes not at a straight-angle?

This is where I stand...
Ok, yes, it may save your head from crashing into a windshield when traveling at low to moderate speeds and at a straight-angle.

But, I'm not willing to spend $15,000+ for a bike that has an airbag that may or may not save my life. Have these airbags ever PROVEN that they save lives from an actual real life crash???? Have they?

And another thing...that video that was shown, the bike was only traveling 31mph. Notice how far the crash dummy is ejected straight up into the air just at that low speed. Where's Newton's Law come into affect there? Hmmm. What happens at 55mph? Or even 45mph?

I give them respect for trying to make bikes safer. I just seriously doubt motorcycle airbags will work effectively.

I don't quite understand what you are asking here.....??

You can disagree with my viewpoints regarding airbag but Newton's Laws are irrefutable.

Perhaps....

But this is the exact same arguments raised by the opponents of the automotive airbags back in he 1970s.

Well, at least he basically admitted that the way he initially characterized airbags was totally ridiculous.

Good one Johnny boy...you're a real funny guy. And how was my initial statement ridiculous? Yea I was wrong, it didn't eject the dummy backwards in the opposite direction, it ejected the dummy straight up into the air. And the was only one test. Keep talking, I always yawn when I'm interested.

And to HypeRR...jonhy boy posted up a video of the airbag at work, which when tested the airbag ejected, the dummy hit the airbag, and the bag shot it up into the air vertically. The bike was only traveling 31 mph...I was asking you what you think would happen if the bike was going 45+mph..

I still don't understand what you are questioning. The video demonstrates exactly what I stated regarding Newton's Law as well as demonstrating the airbag's effectiveness in crashes like these.

When the bike hits the car, Newton's Law goes into motion(sorry) and the bike does a stoppie while the rider is projected forward and into the car. There is no way the rider would have survived that crash.

With the airbag, the rider does not hit the car and the majority of the energy is absorbed by the airbag while it safely pushes the rider upward.

And actual impact at 31mph is pretty severe. 45mph would be insane. If you are asking if the rider would survive at 45 mph even with the airbag, I don't know....maybe. But the chance for survival is far greater with the airbag.

Wouldn't any direction be better than the one pointing into the object being hit?

^^^I dunno, buy a Goldwing and run into something. Just kidding, but you're right, it is better. Just as long as there's nothing above you to break your neck on. Which would rarely be the case. And as long as you actually hit the airbag instead of getting slammed from the side by a car at an intersection or something of that nature.

Anyways, I doubt race bikes will ever incorporate airbags so I shouldn't come across one of those. And I never meant to cause such a big scene but Johnny boy is a drama queen apparently.

Have fun everyone and be safe, airbag or no airbag.

Don't be so sure my friend. Did you ever imagine TCS in racebikes and paddle shifter on F1s? :frusty:

I'm not sure I call getting your feet 3 feet off the ground "shot up into the air vertically."

The bagless rider goes just as high vertically - the difference was that this rider did it after breaking his neck.
