Hate speed cameras. But they work, don't they. Slow down, jackasses.

Here in the UK we have more speed cameras than cops - they are everywhere (I pass four in a five mile journey into a neighbourhing town, for example). Opinions about their use are polarised but they are widely hated and regarded as a money-making scam for the police. There is plenty of evidence to back that up. They are so disliked that we have a 'guerrilla' organisation here (MAD - Motorists Against Detection) dedicated to pulling them down, or occasionally even blowing them up. Heigh ho!

There has been a lot of solid research over the years, and plenty of evidence to show that the authorities have been massaging the figures. Some research results appear to show speed cameras cause more accidents than they prevent. Some show that they tend to catch the driver who accidentally drifts over the limit now and then rather than the habitual speeder. (A fair number of drivers/bikers here now carry GPS devices that warn you when you are coming up to a camera.)

Whatever the truth, it is likely that their benefits, if any, are minimal and some of them are certainly dangerous. Much depends on where they are sited.

Like Cooler, I don't like them. I put them in the same category as mobile phones and in-car TV sets. They distract attention from the proper task of the driver or rider - keeping their eyes on the road.

Yeaaaa, here in germany it's the same than in old England.

But another point ist, that most of the cameras here take a front-picture!
So - no plate, no fine... Raise your left hand for a nice greeting, smile under your helmet and drive your way withaout breaking.

On the other side - it's kind of a reflex to go into the breaks immediatly, sure.
But take it easy...

Speed camers are also known as traffic enforcement camera, road safety camera, road rule camera etc. It is an is an automated ticketing machine. It may include a camera which may be mounted beside or over a road or installed in an enforcement vehicle to detect traffic regulation violations, including speeding, vehicles going through a red traffic light, unauthorized use of a bus lane, or for recording vehicles inside a congestion charge area.

I don't mind speed cameras. I ride a Harley, so I can't go that fast anyway.

Speed cameras are one scourge we haven't seen here in Utah yet, and I hope we don't anytime soon. They strike me as inappropriate, but only because it seems like a violation of the 'dance'. I take a risk by speeding -- the cops have to come out and work to catch me. That's supposed to be the deal.
