When I talked to my primary care physician about downhill skiing, she cautioned me to wear a helmet. She noted that, as a side benefit, people would think I was really fast.

Biking-wise, I'm a noob and an ATTGATT kind of girl. I haven't been on a charity or poker ride yet, but the pictures I've seen are full of people in t-shirts and jeans. From your experience, are riders in full gear an anomaly at these events?

I wouldn't say anomaly but a minority certainly. I no longer attend those types of events because of the high number of people using alcohol at them.

From what I see, or lack there of, almost no one wears anything more than a helmet.

Well. It seems that many of the folks that show up for "poker runs" aren't the most safety minded. Charity rides can go either way, a lot depends on who's sponsoring the event. Group rides can get ugly in a hurry - because you've got a lot of strangers to each other riding in very close quarters. One wrong move, metal hits metal, and down they go.

It used to be that I'd NEVER see those piloting cruisers in anything more than a half shell. Only the sport bikers or "commuters" wore full face helmets. Now, probably 1 in 6 cruiser riders I see on the road in MD are wearing full face helmets.

You choose what you are going to wear. If anybody gives you a hard time for wearing full gear, find someone else to ride with. I recommend that you stay well away from large group ride events anyhow. Choose a few trusted friends to ride with for now.

Riding in my one and only "mixed" group ride, had a woman decide she didn't like her place in the lineup and started passing folks. Tempers heated up and folks lost focus... nothing happened fortunately. I decided to take my OWN way back.
