Is this legal in any or all states?

I've always wondered if I could like put LED strips on my body or a strobe light on a vest like a bicyclist uses.

I would love it if at night I could fire off a strobe when cars go to cut me off.

Which isn't ok, the strobe, the LED or both? :)

When I was helmet shopping the other day there was a bucket with flashing LEDs like you see for tail lights for bikes... I didn't buy it but I did think it was quite novel but the design was not to my taste and most importantly it didn't fit. I think it was this one http://www.g-max.com/gmax/gm68s.html or http://www.g-max.com/gmax/gm68s-dragon.html

I don't know the laws where you are but here (Ontario) I do know that having a forward facing red blinky lights can get you a ticket (I learned from some one else's experience of receiving said ticket, so it was a cheap lesson for me). Yellow and white are ok. I suspect blue is as well but at the time of learning blue led's weren't common on the market and I base this assumption on the fact many utility/delivery vehicles have a blue blinking light on top. I don't know about green but they are commonly used by volunteer emergency responders here.

So if you were to wear a blinky bucket or vest, as long as the directions of the blinkies are correct I don't foresee a problem, but you may want to check your local laws of the road. I wouldn't want to modify the bucket it's self as you could compromise helmet. I also wouldn't be putting the battery pack anywhere near my teeth...

I have Hyperlites (Flashing REd LED's that flash only with th e brakes applied). The state inspector made me disconnect them for inspection. I reconnected them later, but technically, they are against NJ State law, any way. Blue lights are reserved for Police and Vol. Fire. The PoPo give tickets around here for the blue windshield washer LEDs on cars, so I am pretty sure a blue LED wouldn't fly either.

red and blue both make people think its a police officer and its against the law to impersinate a police officer. Green/purple/yellow whatever are ok in some states but some states say any flashing light is illegal.

Those states must be the mythical 51st and 52nd: all states allow some kind of flashing lights. Turn signs and motorcycle headlight modulators are 50 state legal.

Remember, some cars have turn signals that flash the brake light on and off and those are perfectly legal.

you know what I ment didnt have to turn it into a "joke". Strobes are not legal as they flash quite fast and last I knew those led's flashed quite fast. They are illegal in some states because they can be used to "impersinate" a blinker making someone think you are turning when you are not. They are just like ground affects which are also illegal in most states.

This applies to NJ only.

Only yellow or red turn signals can flash rearward, only yellow or white turn signals forward. No green, blue, or any other color (except yellow or red) visible, flashing or not. If you have red lights visible from the front or yellow, other than turn signals, to the rear, you are in violation.

Headlight modulator is 50 state legal.

Flashing red brake light is not legal in NJ, but the Police don't seem to mind it. I have Hyperlites, and have never been stopped for it, though the inspection station makes me disable them to pass inspection. The modulator is legal, but I have been questioned 4 times by Police about it. I carry a copy of the regulation and non-confrontational demeanor. No tickets, and so far, friendly departures from the police.
