What do you all think about this introduction. Will they catch on? I guess only useful for frontal collision, is it only Honda making these?

Haha...yea, lets put an airbag on there so we can hit something, bounce off the thing, and fly the opposite direction and hit something else.

Stupid idea if you ask me.

I think the Honda Goldwing is the only one that has it right now. Anything that is going to save lives is worthwhile IMO. It would definitely come into play in the all to often car turning left in front of the bike(it would be a right turn in front of the bike in Japan). Yeah I would definitely rather hit an airbag than go over the handlebars and eat someone's windshield.

I would have to believe that anything that an world class engineering company like Honda would create would have to be highly effective.

I remember when people use to laugh at airbags in cars when they first came out....

They have a new safer motorcycle. Complete steel cage around the passenger compartment, 4 wheels for stability, front and side airbags.

Personally, I don't want it safer. It is inherently unsafe and that what is good about it, to me.

To make the bike safer, we need stability control, ABS, airbags, training wheels, low power, passenger and driver protection. At what point does it cease to be a motorcycle and become a car?

I have a car already. If I was low risk, I take the cage. If I want my adrenal gland to get some exercise, I have the motorcycle.

And remember: stay away from home and stay out of the bathroom in particular. Most people die in their homes and particularly the bathroom. I mean, this is the only way to be truly safe. If we stay out of the bathroom, we will be saving lives!

The thing is, unlike training wheels or rollcages, the airbag does not detract from the freedom, looks, or the general function of the motorcycle. Yes it adds some weight and complexity to the bike but in the case of a bike like the Goldwing, it is hardly detrimental. I would hardly think that a Goldwing rider would notice the extra weight of the airbag in his bike, decreasing his riding enjoyment.

TCS, Stability Assist, ABS are all active safety features, while the airbag is a passive safety feature. Active safety features help you prevent from getting into an accident; while a passive safety feature helps prevent injuries after you get into an accident.

I like the idea of an ABS(dirt bikes excluded). I think the current ABSs are all good; nothing like the questionable first generation ABS that I had in my 1995 K75.

TCS have now entered the world of racing. Many purists have stated that TCS is ruining racing. They may have a valid point.

What do you personally think of ABS & TCS? What about slipper clutches?

When it has 4 wheels and a cage.
I don't think its a bad idea. It must be designed so you'd hardly notice it and if it could save my life I'd want it.

Wow. Apparently this guy gets pleasure from trying to argue with me. And wow...that was one video. In a controlled environment. Showing one of only a thousand different ways you can wreck a motorcycle, in which case the airbag shot the dummy straight up into the air instead of backwards like I said it might.

Really...your just as overly dramatic as that corny music they were playing to the slow motion video.

I don't know if this is being said tongue in cheek but if you are serious, this is physically impossible.

If your bike hits an object & comes to a halt, you yourself will continue forward at the original velocity until you hit something(Newton's First Law); or you travel enough for gravity to take over and you slam onto the pavement(Newton's law of gravity). So given the choice, if you are going to eat something, would you rather that be a windshield of a Volvo, asphalt, or an airbag?

The force you exert on the airbag is returned by the airbag onto you(Newton's Second Law). There is no way that it would increase the energy, changing the direction of your travel. :catapult2:

I was being sarcastic.

And I still think it's a stupid idea. Newton can shove it.
