Not exclusively about bikes but it will cover my trip from idiot squid to (I hope) wise old biker. I will post here when it's updated.

Most entertaining. You write very well.

Now. I'm tired, and busy, so I must take a pass at thrashing you soundly for certain disrespectful remarks you've made about the Garden State. Silly Manhattanite. Your reprieve is only temporary, your thrashing awaits. As soon as I feel like doing it. It's tiring, living in New Jersey, y'know........

My loathing for New Jersey doesn't come from being a Manhattanite -- both because I'll be a Brooklynite before much longer and because I don't really think of myself as a New Yorker...

it comes from the fact that I'm from Delaware, where our state motto is "at least you're not in New Jersey!" course, that's south jersey.

Pah. Delaware! A minor annoyance. We should have annexed it years ago!!

Of course, you could say that things like hypothermia, dehydration, or heat stroke all fall under "limits" since you've exceeded the safe operating parameters of Yourself. Hunger and Anger could easily fall under that umbrella as well. There was no question about this on the test and I can think of no reason why anyone should learn by rote four and only four categories of human impairment.

Indeed. Assuming you begin motorcycling in earnest, you'll have plentry of opportunity to learn about hypothermia first-hand this coming winter. :(

You're a bari-tenor like 80% of the rest of us. Darned few real basses and tenors in this world! (I'm a former choir director.)

That's right: I polish my bike and move it across the street several times a week, but I haven't actually ridden the thing yet.

Funky system in NY. In NJ the course adds a MSF endorsement to your permit on the spot. You take that to a DMV office as soon as you find one open (typically next day since the course ends on Sunday) and they issue you a M-endorsed version of your license immediately.

In NYS there is a third wheel bureaucratic organization called MANYS (Motorcycle Association of New York State) which 'oversees' the schools which offer MSF courses. Apparently the DMV didn't trust or simply didn't want to deal with the individual schools and so they require this entirely separate private contractor to supervise the schools.

The school mails a form to MANYS.

MANYS mails a form to Albany.

Albany mails me the waiver.

There's a reason they call New York a 'slow paperwork state.'

And that's how I like it!

No action on the motorcycle front (next week!) but it's still on two wheels:
