Suzuki GS500 ('92) vs Yamaha FZ1 ('01)

#1 Unread post by Pierce »

I'm buying a bike tomorrow and everything came down to GS500 and FZ1. Exactly same price.

GS500 from 1992, great shape, running smooth, no issues.

FZ1 from 2001, naked, radiator hose's leaking, no speedometer (in Texas you don't need it though), the seat is torn and will have to replace it in a couple of months. Some scratches, but nothing major.

What y'all think of it? Which one and why?

Why would you even consider one that someone has obviously not cared for. You may fix these minor issues quite easily, but I would be more afraid of the ones that might creep up on you down the highway...

Besides, the FZ may have been stunted. I'd worry that the long continuous wheelies you see on YT means no lubrication in the engine for long periods.

500cc is a very nice size for someone with 0 years of experience.

Both bikes have their own merits, so it really depends on what you're looking for in a motorcycle. Decision Factors:
- Maintenance and Reliability: If you want a bike that’s ready to go with minimal fuss, the GS500 seems like the better choice.
- Performance and Power: If you’re looking for a more powerful ride and don’t mind putting in some work to fix it up, the FZ1 could be more exciting.
- Budget for Repairs: Consider the cost of fixing the FZ1’s issues versus the GS500’s potentially lower maintenance needs.
Ultimately, it comes down to your priorities and riding style. Do you prefer a reliable, classic ride or a more powerful, modern bike that needs some TLC?
