It's pretty simple here. You can study the The DoL manual (HERE) Then, after practicing you can take the parking lot test. Or you can take a, State recognized, MC safety class. When you have graduated from (passed) this class you will be given the endorsement. After you paid, of course.

Ontario Canada, graduated licensing is in effect so you hop through these hoops. 1- written test at the license bureau. Easy little 20 questions or so, I think you can get 4 wrong. That entitles you to ride any size bike, no passengers, no 400 series highways (multi lane, over 100 km/hr speed limits) and no night driving. This is valid for 90 days. After 60 days you take a parking lot test that is cones and what not (u turns, breaking, serpentine) and a small round the block in traffic test and you now have a M2 license which is valid for 3 years I believe. Let's you ride with the only restriction being you have to maintain a 0.0 blood alcohol level. After 18 months you can take a 20 minute road test where you are given an ear piece and followed by examiners who tell you where to go and if you pass it you have a full M level lisence.

How's that work? Do you have to come in and get tested, every now and then?

Not quite, but if you're stopped by a police and they smell it on you, and you blow anything other then a 0.0 your cooked. So not even a glass of wine with dinner is acceptable.
