hey y'all! it's been a while, but I wanted to check in and say hi. In November, I had my 4 surgery on my ankle, and it finally seems like this one did the trick. july will be two years since my bike wreck - and i hope that I am finally on the permanent mend.

The final uptick is that I have a 10 inch steel rod running from my left heel through my ankle adjacent to my tibia, anchored in place with screws and locking pins. I have no more ankle movement on that side and my left leg is 3/4 inch shorter. But I didn't lose my foot, and while I'm still in a crazy boot, i can walk on it, albeit with a cane.

My left hand twitches every time i drive by a bike, and I still ache to feel the wind and the air around me as I ride... yet don't think I will ever be completely comfortable with the risk of two wheels again (considering how long and complicated this recovery has been). I also won't be able to clutch/shift with my left foot/ankle any more. I am looking at both traditional trikes and the can-am's to someday at least get back in the wind.

Anyone have any guidance on stats/safety records, etc on trikes vs. traditonal two-wheelers?

I want to again thank all my friends here for your constant support and well-wishers!

Great to hear you're finally on the road to recovery. I'll go with the Can Am as well. I think you should take a look at the new touring model, it has a more standard sitting and it seems to be roomier all around...

I'd definitely say the Spyder. They come in a manual (foot shifter) and auto (electronic paddle shifters), so that wouldn't be a problem for you, plus even the most spartan version comes with a trunk big enough to put a full face helmet in. The luxo-barge version comes with enough room to stick your average Goldwing in... lol

Not considering clutchless two wheelers? (VFR, Mana, maxi-scooters, etc.)

Anyway, aside from the Can Am, you might also consider hacks.

just for yucks - even with the dreaded 'boot' cast still on , i went to look at can-ams today. took a test drive. HOLY MOLY!!!!!! they are FAST. I know it's not two wheels, but damn, it felt good to be out in the wind again ... They aren't cheap, but it was my first time back in the saddle since the accident, and i was pretty nervous. the extra stability for this first ride back was really good for me - and let me get my riding 'legs' back... just a little!

lesson 1. do NOT countersteer three-wheeled vehicles - hehehehehehe damn reflexes.

wrider, you and i could both ride one of these together - though it would look ridiculous and might make us eternally infamous here...

Congrats on finally being on the mend. Guess I don't need to tell you about my experience test riding the Spyder since yours sounds about the same! If I ever go to three wheels, it'll be on something like a Spyder rather than a traditional tryke.
