cutting muffler in half?

#1 Unread post by Dirtytoes »

this is a 2nd muffler that i got last night.....i'm planning on cutting it in half.

i know that its gonna lose some back pressure but other than that, is there any downsides to doing this?

it looks something like this:

I'll assume you mean you want a shorty can (half length not split down the middle). It really depends on the design, for example my bike has a double pass through system meaning the gas gets sent to the end, then looped back to the start and then exits. Sort of like an "S" this would turn it into a straight through pipe.

As far as I know you should be okay doing it, but you're going to want to be careful about breathing in anything that comes out when you cut it. A dust mask and some safety glasses would be a good idea.

Have you given any thought to how you're going to reattach the end of the can after you cut it? It's going to be a LOT louder, are you sure you want that?

You've got a Yosh system on your bike I thought? Why would you take that off?
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

I chopped about a third off my can and it made a small difference to the volume but overall it just sounds deeper.
Cutting it will not affect engine performance as by the time the gases reach the muffler they are just trying to exit.

How is the Leo Vince? I've been looking at picking a couple up for the Duck as the price is right.
