Uh Oh, cold fingers!
So admittedly, I never rode so late into the season before that I really had to deal with temperatures below 50 or 60 degrees. This is the first.
Today was the first fairly cold morning. It was around 37-40 when I left. I'm in pretty good shape warmth wise, except my damn fingers. I'm just using some leather cold weather motorcycles gloves.
When i get on the highway going 65 or so, my fingers get cold.
I'm riding to upstate NY tomorrow for a wedding where its going to be cold.
What can I do RIGHT NOW to help my fingers out?
I have heated grips, but I wont have time to install them before I leave early tomorrow morning.
Vstrom hand guards on my bandit are a great idea, but I can't do that in time either:
Has anyone used those throw away hand warmers they sell at REI? Do they get heat down into your fingers?
Or, has anyone used a cheap battery heated non motorcycle glove before? Are those any good?
Any other ideas?
I really don't want to take my jeep tomorrow....

I ride in 40 degree weather (thats about as cold as it gets here)...I usually just wear a leather jacket under my lined mesh jacket, and the engine keeps my legs warm enough. I'm fairly toasty.
Hands, I don't know. They usually just freeze but the rest of me is warm so it makes up for it, with some slapping and rubbing at the stoplights.

My plan for this winter is to buy wind guards for my hand grips. The cold wind seems to me to be the biggest factor with cold hands. I've tried ultra warm gloves - not enough. I've tried glove liners - too bulky, making it difficult to operate levers. I don't care for the idea of grip warmers, but I guess that might work. I'm thinking, however, that the tops of your hands will still get too cold from the wind rush.
So wind guards is what I'm trying this year anyway. And hopefully with my winter riding gloves it will be enough. Good luck! It can be a real problem trying to have a safe, comfortable ride with cold digits.
edit: Doh! I just noticed from your pic that you already have wind guards. And they're not enough?! Uh-oh... I'm still going to try it. Let us know what you finally end up doing.
Cheers,
Loonette

Took the bike into work today to pickup some tickets. 38 degree or so ride in. Heated hand grips rule. Do whatever it takes to get them installed. I was wearing my thin leather spring/summer gloves and did OK on the 17 mile trip (13 of which are freeway).

my brother-in-law said he saw a guy riding with what looked like dishwasher gloves I guess he was using it to block the wind from his hands, but I don't know how effective it is.
Are those windguards pretty universal? I'd like to get a set for my bike...

Yep, its a known trick..... if you're willing to leave you're pride at the door, dishwashing gloves will do a marvellous job...... I just have too much pride still to trysharpmagna wrote:my brother-in-law said he saw a guy riding with what looked like dishwasher gloves I guess he was using it to block the wind from his hands, but I don't know how effective it is.
