Empty tank and backfiring

Hi all,
I'm very new to the motorbike world. I have a Honda Steed 600 (VLX) from early 2000.
The bike has only had some issues with backfiring and some low-performance issues we managed to fix (seems to be the CDI).
Recently, i have some backfire issues again (like an explosion) and the engine will go very slow before stopping. I realize it is when the tank is empty or almost.
Is it common to have a backfire reaction/slow performance when the tank is empty?
