I'm a new rider and I've noticed a few times that when I downshift my Suzuki Savage into first it doesn't always engage. Most of the time it does, but occasionally I have to push down twice to get it to 'click' into first. Is this something I should get looked at or be concerned about? I don't want to end up at a stop light and not be able to get my bike into gear.

Are you still rolling when your trying to down shift into first? Many bikes are very stubborn about this and won't let you. Sign of a good tranny.

Now if your at a full stop and it's a little stubborn don't be worried all bikes do this and it's just a sign that an oil change is near.

When oil velocity breaks down oil becomes thick and goopy like syrup. It makes it hard for moving parts like your shifting fork to move around.

With an oil change you should notice a difference.

Thanks for the reply Mike. Yes, I notice this happening when I'm rolling to a stop with the clutch disengaged. Is it not good to shift down into first until the bike's stopped rolling?

Joe, most riders get in the habit of doing all their downshifting before the bike is stopped. It doesn't hurt anything at all and, well... on most bikes it's just easier.

You may want to check that your clutch lever free-play is adjusted correctly. If the cable is too slack it'll make it harder to shift.
