Prevention is better than cure.. you should get an antivirus with anti-malware capabilities. I currently use McAfee, not sure how well it works though

McaFee and Norton are programs that love to eat up your memory. Neither of them are worth using.

+1 on that

I have spybot, spyware blaster, and Avast antivirus. My computer runs nice and quickly, and haven't had a single spyware/adware infection in the last year (even though I use internet explorer and not firefox  )

Before with McAffee, my computer ran at ~ half speed, and still managed to get adware infections

The best part is, all the toold I currently use are completely free for home use.... can't really grumble

Expecially if you get Norton system works. You basically have to dissable it to run anything.

I hate McaFee because once you load it up, you can't uninstall it. Sadly it comes preloaded on Dell's.
