Classic rock for me,

usually folksey stuff

Tom petty, Dylan

Blues, all of it. Don't know if there is a category for it or not, but i love when someone wails on a harmonica for about 10 minutes.

jazz
classical-instrumentals. Can't handle the opera bit. Sounds too much like there is some labia pinching going on to me.

country-southern rock

I always get confused with the sub genres...I listen to pretty much everything anyways.
Ever hear Portishead? They are considered trip hop. Good stuff. Not sure if that is a made up thing, this trip hop. But part of my point in this thread is that all genres are made up, so if you say sludge is a genre, I guess you can have that one too.

Yeah, I hear ya on sub genres. Catagorizing music is not easy. If you go to the music store, or even better, Best Buy, and look under hip hop, or rap and see if you can find the Beastie Boys. I don't think you will - you have to look under rock. BS - they are not rock, at least by most traditonal standards. Then again, who defines and enforces genres? Really I guess it is up to each person. Make finding music hard sometimes.

Yup I have the Beasite Boys, they were the first album I ever bought!.. They are under hip hop/rap in I Tunes, but I have seen them in the Rock section before.

I looked up Portished, sounds kinda like electronica.

Genre is too subjective. I have about 2000 mp3s, and for the majority of them, I had to change the genre to something that actually made sense.

i miss the So. Cal punk scene ( grew up there and left for chicago in97)
Obviously Social Distortion is old school punk, but i like some arenas of Punk-

Rockabilly
( gives me a reason to have the pompadore and cuff my jeans!)

Psycholbilly!
Check out Tiger Army (cross between Morrissey, goulish haunting themes and punk)

hmmm..maybe i'll post some Tiger Army lyrics on my TMW blog

I grew up in the House and techno age and a great band is
Theivory Corporation- they arent trip hop, and not House, but they sadly seem to fall in this catch all category- Electronica

California Uber Alles![/b]

Don't forget Emo. Also drum and bass.
A dog had his chain reduced one link at a time, every few days, until his chain was so short he could barely move. He never resisted because he was conditioned to the loss of his freedom slowly, over time. Are we in this country becoming like the dog?
