@RedBull @KTM Factory rider Antonio Cairoli pulled out some positives for the Factory team with a solid third place finish in his second moto of the MXGP of Sweden in Uddevalla to pick up points in the title chase and move into second place in the point standings after Round 11.
The defending champion, still recovering from a fractured wrist from a crash at the MXGP of Italy, picked up a total of 28 championship points, which moved him up to second behind French rider Romaine Febvre. Febvre was also the winner in Sweden with Jeremy van Horebeek and Kevin Strijbos taking the minor places. Cairoli, who also crashed in the first moto but recovered to finish in thirteenth place, was seventh overall thanks to his solid third place in the second moto. Top KTM rider in MXGP was British rider Shaun Simpson in sixth.
Cairoli’s MXGP teammate Tommy Searle was back on the track after an injury break but crashed in the first moto and had to retire after only one lap in the second. Ken de Dycker, the third member of the Orange MXGP squad is also out injured and did not start.
The Red Bull KTM Factory team went to Sweden knowing it was a difficult task with key members still recovering from debilitating crashes. In MX2 Jeffrey Herlings, who broke a collarbone in a crash at Germany’s Teutschenthal two weeks ago was set to ride with a freshly plated fracture and in fact delivered an impressive performance in his opening MX2 moto.
The Dutch rider, also the fastest qualifier on Saturday, was quick out of the gates, grabbed the holeshot and went on to win his first race. Jeffrey also got a good start in his second moto but to the horror of his team and fans, his race ended coming out of the first corner of the Uddevalla track. Herlings crashed hard, landed on his healthy shoulder but at the same time sustained lacerations to two fingers and had to retire. To add to the disappointment for the 2-time MX2 World Champion, Herlings was looking at a possible hat trick at the Swedish circuit after having won in 2013 and 2014.
Then after another strong first moto performance by Herlings’ factory teammate Pauls Jonass of Latvia, he too came unstuck coming off a jump with six minutes of regulation race time left in MX2 Race 2. Jonass flew high in the air and landed smack on the hard pack track and was lucky that his airborne KTM 250 SX-F didn’t crash on top of him. Team rookie Davy Pootjes also crashed and had to retire.
