Stephen Sword claims fifth for #Buildbase #Honda at Weston Beach #Race

14 October 2013, 10:41

The annual Weston-super-Mare Beach Race took place yesterday with former British MX Champion Stephen Sword tackling the gruelling event on behalf of Buildbase Honda aboard the 2014 Honda CRF450 – the first outing for the team with the new machine. The Dave Thorpe Honda Off-Road Centre instructor proved he’s still got what it takes in a competitive environment, bringing the machine home in fifth place and as the highest-placed Honda in the three-hour race.

Weather conditions were wet and tricky on Sunday afternoon as 500 riders set off down the mile-long straight and towards the first set of sand dunes. Sword rounded the first corner in a strong front-running position, but made a mistake on the first dune causing him to crash. He re-mounted and by the first quarter of a lap had recovered to 75th position.

As the race progressed, the Buildbase Honda CRF450 did not miss a beat as Sword pushed hard and steadily progressed towards the front of the field. The team performed effortlessly and completed six planned pit stops, along with an unplanned stop to straighten the gear lever after clipping a post on the track.

By the end of a punishing three hours, Sword had made an impressive recovery to finish in a well-deserved fifth place, just 15 seconds off the podium. The race win went to Graeme Irwin, with Nathan Watson and Matthew Moffat in second and third places and Todd Kellett in fourth place.

Yesterday was a really tough and challenging day for everyone; the conditions were very hard with the consistent heavy rain and spray. Stephen rode great all race to recover from the early crash and finish in such a strong fifth position. The race has been a good test for the first outing of the 2014 Honda CRF450, with Stephen putting it through its paces. The bike didn't miss a beat all race long.
