#LONDON’S LARGEST LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY “QUIETLY” TESTING THE ZERO DS #ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE

Zero Motorcycles, the global leader in the electric motorcycle industry, announced in mid-October in the United Kingdom and greater Europe that London’s Metropolitan (Met) Police - Motorcycle Tasking Team, has taken delivery for further assessment of the Zero DS (Dual Sport) electric motorcycle for urban patrolling purposes. This news reaches the United States as Zero is embarking on its largest product line unveiling to date at next week’s 2011 EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, Italy. Zero has been very active over the past year working closely with local law enforcement agencies and special military programs to educate them on the benefits of electric motorcycle technology.

The Zero DS is the first electric motorcycle to participate in a trial with a United Kingdom law enforcement agency. As part of the program, the Zero DS will be evaluated in two areas of policing – The Motorcycle Tasking Team will use the bike at its roadside tasking sites and will also be using it for actual law enforcement purposes.

The bike will also be used as part of the Met’s “BikeSafe” and “ScooterSafe” programs, which are aimed at raising awareness and offering briefings and assessments around the country to help reduce motorcycle related accidents.

Mick Cheeseman, Sergeant in the Motorcycle Tasking Team for the Met, said, “The Motorcycle Team is very excited to be given the opportunity to test the Zero DS under everyday police conditions. Much of our work is about giving advice and instruction on keeping motorcyclists safe on London’s roads, and being able to do this on an electric motorcycle means also we can aim to reduce our impact on the environment. The Zero DS is a technologically advanced machine and we look forward to trialling it over the next few weeks to see how it can be used to as a daily part of our police business.”

Edwin Belonje, Managing Director, Zero Motorcycles Europe, added, “We are very pleased to have this opportunity to work with London’s Metropolitan Police and to support their efforts to find ways to reduce their carbon output by using zero emission vehicles on a daily basis. The Zero DS will provide them with an insight into the huge benefits of electric vehicles, including noise reduction, particularly relevant in pedestrian areas, reduced running costs as there is minimal servicing and maintenance costs associated with electric vehicles, and obviously lower fuel costs.”

Zero Motorcycles are currently being used by law enforcement agencies in Scotts Valley, Calif., Santa Cruz, Calif., the City of Pointe-Claire and by the New Mexico Fish and Wildlife Service, where Zeros are utilized daily by the police department and security divisions to assist with local patrols and traffic enforcement.

The Zero DS is being supplied in full Met Police uniform thanks to a sponsorship from the UK’s leading security marking company Datatag ID Ltd. The bike has also been fitted with a Datatag security system.

Ceemes has it spot on, how do you patrol when you've got a range of 50 miles/80kms (at best)?

That's a great point. Maybe it's just for a runner? It would be like THX-1142 movie, if you can run for 51 miles then it's not worth it to continue... you could see it now "suspect has run for 81 miles. We are now stopping for 8 hours to re-charge battery before continuing pursuit"
