Advice wanted: Winter Gloves

#1 Unread post by Skel3tor1 »

It's time again to ask for another product recommendation from the community here. Thanks in advance for reading and replying.

I just rode home in summer gloves with it being 48 degrees outside and my gloves are fully exposed to the air while on my grips. Let's just say after 15 minutes of highway speeds and arriving home, my hands were painfully numb (they did warm up quick though) but anywho...

If anyone has a pair of winter gloves that they absolutely love and would recommend, I am wanting to ride my bike throughout winter. So if you've got experience in them with freezing temps, that would be great. I'm looking for waterproof and windproof at the least. Any other types of insulation like thinsulate or whatever is okay and I'd like the gloves to offer some sort of protection if I end up going down.

I'm not sure if I want to limit myself on pricing just yet, but for now we'll say $50.00 cap. If you've got a pair that are worth the extra dough, you can recommend what you use.

Once again, thanks very much!

I am on the same hunt as you are.
I havent found any gloves that are wonderful yet...
saw some Harley Heated gloves, but they seemed pretty bulky- kinda like snowboarding gloves and i wasnt too sure how much i like that look and feel-

Defintitly something thats long ( like a gauntlet style) and i am still trying to decide if i should go all leather or more of a synthetic materials ( like ski gloves). I know i can go synthetic, but not sure i want to lose the toughness of leather

the search continues!

viewtopic.php?t=17956&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

second post has a pair of gloves I am thinking of getting. On my bike the wind never hits my hands but the cold air sure does and I wear gloves.

from what I have been reading those gloves posted are rated top of the line and one of the best. I havent seen any negatives about those gloves.

I've been looking around for gloves and settled on:

Alpinestars WR-1 Riding Gloves.

They're shipping from within the state so when I get them, I'll write up a review of what I think. It'll probably still be in the 30s here by the time I get them. Retail price is around $80 but I got them on eBay for about $60. Froogle couldn't find anything cheaper than that.

I've been using Lee Parks Design PCI gloves the last couple of weeks and have been extremely impressed with them. My commute is 36 highway miles and the outside temps have gone as low as the upper 30°'s combined with the ride's wind chill, and I was still comfortable.

They're pricey, $179.00 MSRP but you may be able to get them cheaper on e-bay.

While I hated spending that much for gloves I recommend them heartily.
Ride like Hell, you'll get there!

MY review

Sorry this took a while to do as there has to be at least one person waiting for my review on the gloves.

It finally went below 40 degrees the other night, in fact, When I left work prior to midnight it was about 29 degrees outside.

I rode for about 20 minutes, most of that was highway speeds at 74 mph. I didn't have my gloves inside with me as they were in my helmet on my bike so I started out with the gloves being cold.

These are great gloves. A little on the bulky side but for what they offer, it's worth it.

Windproof. Yes.
Waterproof Yes, but haven't tested it.

About the only thing I have that's negative about these gloves is if you are out in cold temps and riding for 40 minutes or longer, you are going to have cold hands. Not numb or painful, but just cold. You really won't notice it until after you take your hands out of the gloves. I was rather surprised. However, I don't really hold that against the gloves due to the fact that my body was probably hoarding all the heat it could in my torso and restricted the amount of bloodflow to my hands. Without any heat, there isn't much insulation can do to help. For $80 retail, which I got for $60 on eBay. I think this was a great buy and I'd shell out the $80 for them unless someone here has heated gloves that are cheaper.

P.S. I haven't had to do the crouch down and let your engine heat up your hands since I've been wearing these gloves. So +1 for not looking like a tard at a red light.

I have a pair of Olympia gloves that work fairly well, but have a very bulky feel. It makes it difficult to do turn signals, cruise control, brights or anything else on the controls. There is definetly a tradeoff...

Two gloves to consider in your price range are the Tourmaster Elites and Teknic Thunder waterproof/breathable gloves. For a better, but more expensive solution, the Gerbing G3 heated gloves will provide warmth and added comfort. It depends on what temps you ride in.

Gerbings are the only reason I've been able to ride as much as I have. +1!
