Re: picking the best tire for the job
Depends on what you're going to do with your Nighthawk after you get beyond that first mile of dirt, cruise down the boulevard or race thru the mountain twisties? I used Dunlop K491 touring tires on my 4 old Hondas getting 25-30k miles from the rears. I traded my 85 CB650SC in on a 97 GS500 and then...

Could be coolant but more likely it's gas that leaked into the oil if oil level has increased. Does oil smell like gas? If so carb clean and oil change might fix.

Yes, you'll get used to it soon enough if you keep at it. I started riding at age 52 and still managed to get 30 years and 400k miles of riding in.

Re: RPM vers gear selected seems off.
My 82 CB750K turned much lower rpm's than that as I recall, it replaced a CB400T first bike that turned about 6k @ 60 mph and I thought that was way too many revs. My 750 was a 6 speed and I think that was why the 750s were going to 6 speeds around that time, about 30 years ago. Now and for the past...

407,211 miles in 30.1 years for 13,528 miles/year average. Started 7/21/84, updated 8/26/14 After four 80's Hondas that I put 230k miles on I rode a new 97 GS500E that I bought in 99 over 22k miles it's first year. Have tapered off since to a few hundred last year but still put a total of over 180k ...

Re: First Crash
I started riding at age 52 Steve and have gone many many miles on motorcycles over the last 30 years but have never ridden a scooter. After riding 230k miles on 4 Hondas with drum rear brakes I bought a GS500 at age 68 with a disc rear brake and when a car jumped like it was pulling out in front of ...

Re: Discuss: Bikes you have owned, your favorite and why?
Started riding late in life at age 52 but have managed to put 400k miles on 6 bikes in the 30 years since on CB400T, CB750K, CM400A, CB650SC, GS500E, and current 02 GS500. Just putted around seeing the scenery on the four Hondas but kinda took off on the GSs taking annual trips to the mountains to p...

Re: 1982 Honda CB450 not starting
Had a 81 CM400 (same engine) years ago with 80-90k miles on it that sat for 3 years in my garage untouched with no storage prep, just parked it. Tried to start it one day and no go and after grinding away for a while a neighbor came over with a can of sarter fluid and the bike started to run and wou...

Re: Hard to find bike?
That one I like, the PC800 is close to 650# wet weight if that's not too heavy it looks like what your looking for. A motorcycle with a built in scoot size trunk. A quick Google shows a lot of them for sale: http://motorcycles.smartcarguide.com/honda-pc800-pacific-coast http://motorcycle.jaxed.com/c...

Those were around when I started riding 30 years ago Mike. Looks like it might meet John's requirements. The new Silverwings might too:

Re: Hard to find bike?
Sportbike: leaning forward with feet back and knees tucked. (Basically: if her heels are behind her knees, that's a "sportbike" riding position to her.) The ability to add highway pegs would also be nice. And again: near as I can tell, a Ninja has nowhere to store so much as a pencil! The heels are...

Re: Hard to find bike?
The NC is a naked bike with no fairing! :wallbash: :wallbash: That's why I suggested an add on windshield which I think gives better protection from the knees up than the fully faired bikes in these 400-800cc sizes which give you a lot of wind/rain in the face. I prefer wet feet to a wet head. You ...

Re: Hard to find bike?
I'm at a loss to figure out what you really want since your first post John, how about clarifying a few items. Both the Ninja 500 and the GS500 are strictly old standard sit upright bikes. The Ninja has a half fairing and the only GS500 sold in this country since 2004 has had full sportbike type bod...

Re: Discuss: What are your weather limits for riding?
I've ridden year around here in NE Ohio for most of my 30 years of riding in temps down to about 20F when streets were mostly clear of snow and ice, have splashed thru a zillion gallons of salt water. But I began to keep it above 32F about 2-3 years ago and above about 40F this past winter. With the...

Re: Discuss: What tire have you purchased that you like most
Nobody up for another tire thread? It's not easy, so many tires for many different reasons. I used Dunlop 291 and 491 rear touring tires getting 25-30k miles from them on old 400-750 Hondas, tires bought for mileage. Tried them on my 1st GS500 and found it wanted to go around corners faster than the...

Re: Discuss: Do you match the color of your accessories/gear
I replaced my jacket and helmet a couple years ago and have had my GS500 for 10 years and 100k miles now so why not match.
